Why do our bodies need protein?

Protein heading

Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. Your body uses protein to build and repair tissues. You also use protein to make enzymes, hormones and other body chemicals; it is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood.[1]

To enjoy a balanced healthy diet, meals should contain, vegetables, carbohydrates and a fist-sized portion of lean protein. You can get protein from both plant and animal sources; to meet your daily protein requirements combine small to medium portions of meat, dairy and nuts with protein-rich whole grains, pulses and vegetables. Here are some suggestions to guide your choices:

  • Choose protein sources low in saturated fat. Examples are skinless chicken breast, seafood, lean pork, salmon, Greek yogurt, beans, pulses, eggs and nuts – especially almonds and walnuts.
  • Avoid highly processed carbohydrates. Instead, focus on leafy greens and other non-starchy vegetables.
  • Dairy foods are packed with protein and contain bone-building calcium, too.

The rise in popularity of plant-based protein

Plant based blog headingOne of the latest trends in foods is the plant-based diet. Supermarkets and restaurants are well aware of this trend, resulting in more plant-based options than ever before. A plant based diet is not necessarily a vegetarian diet but is primarily based on foods derived from plants, including vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes and fruits, but with few or no animal products.

The benefits of eating a plant-based diet extend past just health and sustainability. In fact, plant-based proteins can be as nutritious as meat but contain far less fat. As a consequence, companies are producing innovative plant-based “complete” proteins and supplements. These innovative plant proteins are an ideal part of an Active Wellness lifestyle.

The good news is that plant-based proteins are easily accessible. Legumes are widely known to provide high amounts of protein, e.g., organic tofu, lentils, black beans, lima beans, organic peas, chickpeas and so on. Nuts and seeds— such as almonds, cashews, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and chia seeds—are also known sources of protein.

Nikken continues to be a pioneer in organic nutrition. One of our first organic nutritional supplements contains multiple benefits other than just providing plant-based protein: Organic Jade Greenzymes® is made with a proprietary blend of organic young barley grass, organic acacia and organic pearl barley.

New to our range, KVB® Natural Food Mix is a healthy meal replacement mix. Use as a base and add PiMag® water, non-fat milk, almond milk or coconut milk. For a variation add fruit or vegetable and blend. Our new KVB® formula contains naturally sourced proteins from organic peas, organic moringa powder, organic spirulina, as well as organic vegetables, prebiotics and probiotics.

The NEW Nikken Everyday Organic-Based Weight Management is based on three basic assertions for a healthy lifestyle: Cleanse, Balance and Energise. It’s simple and convenient.

The latest new products in the Nikken range are all crucial components in the new Everyday Organic-Based Weight Management Pack, along with Kenzen Ten4® Matcha Green Tea Drink.

Kenzen® Cleansedx is a gluten-free, 100% organic nutritional supplement, which may contribute to the support or maintenance of normal liver function and digestion. Featuring organic Roasted Chicory Root, Milk Thistle extract, Turmeric extract, Bupleurum extract, Shisandra and Ashwaghanda. Each of these organic ingredients serves multiple purposes on its own, but together, work in synergy. Simply take three capsules every day 20 minutes before a meal.

In the know: Used for more than 2,000 years to support the liver naturally, Milk Thistle gets its name from the white fluid that comes from the plant’s leaves when they’re crushed.

KVB® Natural Food Mix in Vanilla or Chocolate flavour are formulated with naturally-sourced protein from organic pea, organic rice and organic chlorella. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian or just health-conscious, KVB® helps you put plant protein into your diet.

To create a nourishing breakfast, snack or lunch, use KVB® Natural Food Mix as a base and add PiMag® water, non-fat milk, almond milk or coconut milk. For a delicious variation add your choice of fruit or vegetables and then blend until smooth.

In the know: We tend to associate protein with animal sources: meat, poultry and seafood. However, in the East legumes have also long been key sources of protein: soy, garbanzo, lentil, bean sprouts, pea sprouts, adzuki bean and so on.

Kenzen Ten4® Matcha Green Tea Drink contains 80 mg per serving of natural caffeine from organic matcha green tea. The natural caffeine in organic matcha green tea binds to the naturally occurring phytonutrients to slow down the absorption of the stimulant, giving it a slow release effect. Kenzen Ten4® Matcha Green Tea Drink is a great way to help energise and hydrate you.

In the know: Natural sources of caffeine include seeds, leaves, nuts and berries.

We are offering FREE shipping on the Everyday Weight Management Pack when ordered between 25th October – 31st December 2017. This offer applies to retail, wholesale and Autoship orders. * Terms and Conditions apply (see MyNikken for further details).
