Free Fun Family Days

“I’m bored” the phrase we dread hearing, whether it’s the school holidays or just the weekend we all try as hard as possible to keep children entertained, but on the shorter colder days it can be much harder than in the summer. Without the garden to give children space to run around, and with unpredictable weather, planning any outdoor activity is a risky business. We turn to indoor activities to occupy the days, but these often eat away at our budget. We need to find cheap, fun ways to keep children entertained whatever the weather. We have compiled a list of activities which are cheap, easy and fun.

  • Make a puppet theatre and put on a show
  • Movie afternoon
  • Make masks and crowns from paper plates
  • Karaoke
  • Make a dance/ play
  • Indoor bowls
  • Paint portraits of each other
  • Bake biscuits/ treats for neighbours

  • Teach your kids how to cook your favourite meal
  • Go through old family photo albums
  • Have a duvet day with your Naturest Dream Quilt
  • Make a family tree
  • Have a disco
  • Make your own restaurant and have friends or family round for dinner
  • Make a charity bag, go round the kids rooms and give away old clothes and toys they don’t want
  • Pizza decorating/ making
  • Make friendship bracelets
  • Cut out paper doll chains and decorate each person on the chain
  • House clean up, everyone is assigned one room and it is a competition to who can clean the best
  • Use a phone or video camera to make a film or music video
  • Visit elderly relatives and ask them to tell stories from their lives
  • Make moon sand
  • Make your own play dough and see who can make the best animal shapes

Keeping the family entertained doesn’t have to break the bank. Many of these activities are free or very low cost and can last as long as your children likes. So next time you hear “I’m bored” have a look and see what you can do to keep your kids busy. Or create a rainy day pot, write down all these ideas and have the kids pull one piece of paper out each and do whatever activity it says.

What are your favourite rainy day activities to do with your children?

What are you Thankful for this Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the past year,  and give thanks to the people, events and things in that have happened in your life that you are grateful for. Here is what we’re grateful for this year…

I’ve always appreciated the smaller things in life. I give great thanks to them, as my life wouldn’t be the same. They tend to be forgotten, or taken advantage of, but they really do make a difference to my everyday life.

I’m also thankful for the loved ones I have around me; friends as well as family, that are there for support, advice and laughter the whole year round.

I give thanks this year for the wonderful family and friends I have on both sides of the pond. I truly have some amazing people in my life. It’s hard being an expat because you can’t see all the people you love all the time which is why I’m also thankful that I’m able to return home for a week this year to visit those across the pond. Special thanks go to my husband for being my best friend and partner in crime.

I’m also thankful for the start of my favourite time of year, the Christmas season!

Without sounding too cliché, I am thankful for my family (and the size of it), for helping me and supporting me throughout this eventful year. We’re big, loud, and crazy, but I know there will always be someone to talk to. I guess that’s the good thing about big families, everyone has their specialities.

I am also thankful for being able to live with them peacefully, in a Country that has things that other countries don’t, for example a National Health Service, or even a working police force.

I am most thankful for being surrounded by my family, friends and loved ones, especially now it’s getting closer to Christmas, but also for being able to keep in contact with old friends and distant relatives much more easily. (Thank you Internet!) On a more serious note, I am thankful for my good health and wellbeing.

I also give thanks for being fortunate enough to have a secure home and environment to live in, with warmth, water, food, something which for some is a luxury, when it is actually a necessity of life.

From the thanks given in this blog, it is clear to see that everyone here in the office has something in common this year; being grateful for their Family and Friends.  So before you tuck in to your dinner today, take a few moments to give thanks to the things in your life that make it special.

Don’t forget to tell us what are you Thankful for this year?

Are you armed against this winter’s allergies?

With cold winter mornings and frosty nights approaching, we’ll soon find ourselves hibernating in our homes. But by spending more time indoors, we are more likely to suffer from an indoor allergy. This week is indoor allergy week in the UK, a week used to emphasise simple things which can help eliminate household allergies, to help you have a sniffle-free winter.

There are a number of allergens that may contribute to you or your family feeling unwell.  By spending a considerable amount of time indoors, allergens that previously wouldn’t affect you may start to. These include: House Dust Mites, Pets, Moulds/Mildews, Smoke, Cleaning Agents, Carpeting and Paint.

Not only do they affect the quality of air, but as a result of this can cause Congestion, Respiratory Problems, Itchy Eyes, Poor Sleep, Headaches and Lack of Concentration.

How Nikken can help you attack those Allergens:

  • Breathe – An air purifier is the best solution to get rid of those germs during the winter. It encourages ventilation indoors and eliminating those horrid allergens too. The KenkoAir ®is known to remove airborne particles and allergens, including dust, smoke, pollen, mould spores, animal dander, dust mites and other harmful fibres.  Using such an air purifier will reduce the risk of being effected by the Indoor Allergies this winter.

  • Sleep – Beds are the perfect breeding ground for house dust mites, especially while you are sleeping due to the heat. Good practise to reduce this would be to regularly wash your bed linen, and try using anti-allergy duvets and pillows. But Nikken’s Sleep Products can also help. The Kenkopad®, Naturest® Quilt and Pillow are all made with materials to enhance ventilation. The natural fibres found in the products allow them to breathe, this is complimented by the anti-bacterial qualities found in the bamboo fibres . The latex used in the products ensures that it doesn’t become too hot or moist, meaning bacteria find it harder to multiply. All this to ensure ‘the bed bugs don’t bite’ and you have a comfy night’s sleep.
  • Drink – Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and active enough to fight off allergens. Try using the PiMag® Waterfall to really get the best out of drinking water. PiMag® Waterfall’s filtration system helps reduce contaminants, and maintain a healthy alkaline balance. To give your body that extra boost.

Other Hints and Tips to stay well this winter:

  • When possible, try opening windows for a short period of time to increase ventilation and keep humidity down.
  • Reduce the amount of clutter on shelves, tables, cupboards, window sills etc. to minimise the amount of dust.
  • Regularly vacuum your carpet / floorboards, dust your furniture, and clean surfaces.
  • Allow dust to settle after cleaning, before using a room.
  • Try regularly wash pets, and clean/vacuum surfaces they may have laid on, as their fur hold on to allergens.
  • Ensure good ventilation throughout the house in order to prevent mould. This includes keeping doors shut with cooking and bathing, opening cupboard doors, and not drying wet clothing on radiators.
  • Ensure surfaces are cleaned and dried thoroughly to prevent mould spores.

Healthy Family: Creating that all important work/life balance

“Healthy individuals are the building blocks of healthy families and relationships. A sense of caring for each individual is a vital component in Nikken’s philosophy, which is why our products and vision are based around the family.”

We continue our series on Nikken’s 5 Pillars of Health with the 3rd pillar –Healthy Family. One of the crucial components to the success of a healthy family is creating work/life balance.

Do you feel that there aren’t enough hours in the day to spend important time with your family?

It is a theme commonly depicted in films today, characters that have trouble maintaining a work/life balance. A son’s football game is skipped. A daughter’s dance recital is missed. A couple’s anniversary is forgotten. We watch these characters and think “I never want to become the person whose life revolves around work”.

In today’s fast paced environment it is becoming harder to maintain the work/life balance that we all desire. All too often people are working well past their office hours or skipping lunch in order to meet tight deadlines. People are becoming over stressed, over worked, and over tired, which can lead not only to health problems, but also directly affects your home life.

Direct selling gives you the power to manage your own working hours, family life, and social life. Creating a work/life balance that works for you is a key benefit of direct selling. It is all on your own terms! If your child is ill, you don’t have to worry about calling your boss to take the day off. You are the boss! It is your life and you should have full control of it.

They say “home is where the heart is”. So, what better place is there to work from than the comfort of your own home? Working from home gives you the perfect opportunity to free up time to spend valuable moments with your family.

In closing, there is a famous quote by Confucius we would all do well to live by: “Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life ever again”

What are some ways that you maintain a healthy family? Join the conversation on Twitter (@NikkenEurope) or Facebook ( and tell us! We’d love to hear from you!
