Summer activities for Active Wellness…

Summer Activities Blog Banner

We’ve just passed the summer solstice officially welcoming in the quarter of the year we call summer. This is a brilliant time to kick-start a healthy, active and outdoor lifestyle for you and the whole family. Summertime is many people’s favourite time of year. The days are long, the nights are warmer and it’s a great time to get together with loved ones.

There are so many things to do right on your doorstep that are good for your active wellness, all you need to do is put your comfy trainers on, get out there and experience it for yourselves.

Here are some simple summer health tips to keep your summer days active:

1. Cycling. One of the best activities is always a bike ride. When the sun shows its face head for the outdoors. Cycling is a fantastic way to stay healthy because it is a low-impact aerobic activity. Why not pack a picnic and make it a day of adventure for the whole family. Bike rides are one of the best ways to get your children active and having fun outdoors this summer.

 2. Going on a walk can revive you. Whether you explore quiet forests, look out over a rugged headland towards the sea or stroll around your favourite park, spending time in nature can give you a sense of peace. According to the National Trust Organisation1, forest bathing (known as Shinrin Yoku, developed in Japan) is the practice of simply being among trees. It encourages being mindful of the nature around you, and has been recognised for its benefits to the mind and body as you breathe in the beneficial negative ions found in abundance in forested areas.

 3. Play games outside. Outdoor play helps ensure that you get enough sunlight and that’s good for your body. Even the light we encounter outside on a heavily overcast day far exceeds the lighting we typically encounter indoors. So going outside makes a big difference in the amount of light exposure we encounter. There are many games you can play outdoors such as tennis, football, golf and much more. It’s all about keeping active and having fun!

4. Practice Mindfulness and Appreciation. Our minds are often overburdened with thoughts. If you find your mind in a state of overwhelm, aim to gently and kindly bring yourself back to your breath and the sensation of air flowing in and out through the nostrils. Try practicing active appreciation, acceptance and forgiveness. Life is so much more rewarding and joyful when we focus on the positive aspects of our life.

5. Don’t forget to Hydrate! Proper hydration is extremely important over the summer season. Warmer weather, increased physical activity and more time spent in the sun can easily leave you dehydrated. Conveniently portable, the Nikken PiMag® Water Bottle offers you clean, filtered, alkaline PiMag® water on-the-go. Containing Nikken PiMag® Water Technology, the PiMag® Water Bottle filter cartridge, adjusts the water’s pH value to alkaline 8.5-9.5 range.

The surprising benefits of taking a shower…

Shower Benefits Blog Banner

Whether you use your shower to kick-start your morning and get yourself feeling ready for the day ahead or to unwind in the evening, it can bring feelings of refreshment and relaxation.

Your daily shower can do more for your wellbeing than simply make you feel better. Different water temperatures are thought to bring us slightly different benefits too:

Benefits of hot showers –

– Can help reduce cold symptoms. A nice warm shower could help your cold, as the steam vapours help moisturise and decongest your nasal passages when inhaled.

– Good for muscles. A hot shower can be beneficial to your muscles after a tough long workout. It helps with your recovery as it relieves tension in stiff muscles.

 – Help to relieve aches and pains. The warmth of a hot shower stimulates circulation, loosening joints and tissues.

– Help cleanse your pores. Blocked pores are the leading cause of spots, particularly on the face. When you have a hot shower, these are opened up, giving you the chance to wipe away any blockages when you cleanse.

Benefits of cold showers –

– Cold showers can help improve facial complexion. Cold water helps to constrict blood vessels to temporarily tighten pores and reduce redness. According to the National Sleep Foundation1, washing your face before bed helps reduce breakouts improving your moisturiser’s efficiency and helps to prevent wrinkles. This may not be exclusive to showering but doing them together is much easier.

– May help to reduce stress levels. If you find yourself stressing about the overwhelming number of things you have to do that day, then taking a morning shower could be a great way to alleviate that feeling.

– Help improve circulation. One study has found that taking a cold shower after exercise may improve general hydration by cooling down the body. As blood travels away from the skin, blood vessels in deeper body tissues dilate. This improves circulation in the deeper tissues2.

Whichever temperature you choose to take your shower in, choose the right shower system for you. With Nikken’s PiMag® MicroJet Shower System (#1466) water passes through a filter – showering down clean, chlorine free PiMag® water to refresh and reenergise your whole body whilst helping to reduce water-born dirt, sediments and odours.

The importance of replacing your water filters…

Filters Blog Banner

Keep enjoying great tasting PiMag® water and ensure you are getting the optimal performance from your Nikken PiMag® Water products by replacing the filters at the recommended intervals.

Water Filtration Systems come in many different forms. No matter what type of filtration system you own, you will need to replace the filter on a regular basis in order to keep your devices working smoothly and effectively.

To help standardize and rate filtration systems, manufacturers, regulators and consumers look to NSF International.1  NSF stands for National Sanitation Foundation, an independent organisation dedicated to ensuring the quality and safety of products in the marketplace with the development of standards, testing and certification of products and systems. Nikken’s Filter specifications meet relevant NSF Standards where applicable.

Here are the recommended guidelines on how often you should replace the filters in your Nikken PiMag® Water products:

PiMag® Water Bottle (#13501): Real-time filtration allows Nikken’s PiMag® Water Bottle to filter water anywhere, anytime – filtering while you drink.

Replacement Filter Cartridge (#13503) – available as a pack of two replacement filters.  The filters contain activated natural carbon and pi minerals and are made from biodegradable and recyclable polymers, so you can recycle the cartridge in your local recycling facility. Each filter lasts for an estimated 250 refills (approximately 180 liters).

The patented state-of-the-art filtration technology exceeds NSF standards for reducing particulates, chlorine, chloramine, taste and odor, cysts, lead, bacteria, VOCs, MTBE and more. With Neodymium magnets and a unique filter, the PiMag® Water Bottle adjusts the water’s pH from 7 to 8.5.

PiMag Waterfall® Gravity Water System (#1384): A gravity fed filtration system with a large five-liter capacity (no electricity or plumbing required) is perfect for a kitchen or counter top.

There are two different kinds of replaceable components in the Waterfall System –

Replacement Filter Cartridge (#13845) – replace every 90 days or 900 liters, whichever comes first. The cartridge contains natural activated carbon and pi minerals that increase the water pH (making it alkaline) and decrease the ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential).

PiMag® Mineral Stones (#13846) – release oxygen and minerals whilst regulating pH to the water and should be replaced annually.

PiMag® MicroJet Shower System (#1466): Cleanse your skin with filtered PiMag® Water. Designed to help neutralize chlorine while also helping to reduce water borne dirt, sediment and odours.

PiMag® Shower Filter Cartridge (#1342) – helps condition water without chemicals and should be replaced every 3 months (usage dependent).

SAVE on the cost of your favourite Nikken PiMag® replacement water filters when ordering on Autoship and have them delivered directly to your door automatically every month or every 3 months.

How to live more sustainably…

Sustainable living Blog Banner

Sustainable living is the practice of reducing your demand on natural resources by making sure that you replace what you use to the best of your ability. Sometimes that can mean not choosing to consume a product that is made using practices that don’t promote sustainability. Other times it means changing how you do things so that you start becoming more of an active part of the cycle of life.

Regardless of whether you’ve decided to go green to help the environment, to save money, or just see how easy it is, every step you take towards a sustainable lifestyle is one that helps us all.

Living more sustainably doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive, though the environmentally friendly decisions you make can actually save you money.

Here are a few tips on HOW to live a sustainable lifestyle in your home:

1. Less electricity consumption. One of the easiest ways to be more sustainable in your daily routine is to reduce your consumption of household energy. Turn off the lights and air conditioning when you leave the room and add in dimmer switches so you can control how bright the light is. Unplug (or switch off the sockets) appliances such as the TV when not in use. These account for a significant portion of your bills and taking these steps will help lower them considerably!

2. Prepare food mindfully. Preparing food at home can help you prevent waste. When cooking at home, be mindful of how much you make and save any leftovers. Seek to reduce the amount of waste you produce and compost certain foods such as vegetables and fruit. Not only will this help create a natural fertiliser and keep your garden green, it will also reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and there will not be a build-up of methane gas.

3. Grow your own fruit and veg. Growing your own vegetables isn’t just a good way to save money, it’s also a great way to cut down your carbon footprint and be eco-friendly. Don’t have any outside space? Windowsill boxes are a great way to brighten up your view, filter the air coming into your home and offer plenty of space for herbs and small vegetable patches.

4. Curb your water consumption. Wasting water inflates your water bill, but it also has a much greater negative impact from a sustainability perspective; clean water is a precious resource in many areas. According to the Energy Saving Trust organisation, each household in the UK uses on average around 330 litres each day! Luckily, saving water is pretty simple. Run only full loads through your washing machine and dishwasher. Turn the tap off while you’re brushing your teeth. See if you can trim a couple of minutes off your typical shower, and be sensible when it comes to watering your lawn.

5. Reduce plastic consumption. Plastic never goes away. You can start cutting down on your plastic waste in a few simple steps: use reusable bags when you shop and avoid products made from or packaged in plastic whenever possible. Nikken’s bio-green PiMag® Water Bottle is made from patented BioGreen materials. These materials enable the bottle to completely break down in landfills and compost piles into biomass that nourishes soil and biogas that can be harvested for energy use.2

Another way to reduce plastic consumption is to cut out the shop bought bottled water. Invest in a good water filtration system for your home. Nikken’s PiMag® Waterfall Gravity System can help you and your family contribute to the wellbeing of the environment by drinking filtered water instead of pre-bottled water.

Let’s all live a more sustainable Active Wellness Lifestyle!

Embrace the Power of Spring…

Spring Blog banner

While every change of season seems to ignite the desire for a fresh start, it seems to be more prevalent when it comes to Spring.

With many of us seeing through this Spring from the comfort of our home it’s more important than ever that you take care of your physical health and emotional wellbeing.  It’s easy to build a few simple self-care rituals into your day that could help manage stress and anxiety, build mental and physical resilience and help navigate new challenges.

Introducing some form of exercise into your daily routine, to planning healthy meals and making space for mindfulness are all but a few ideas to staying healthy at home…

1. Be mindful. You can practise mindfulness anywhere, any time. Regular meditation can help you to let go of anxiety and any impatience you might be feeling.

2. Keep active. You don’t need a gym in order to stay active. According to the National Health Service England, to stay healthy, adults should try to be active every day and aim to achieve at least 150 minutes of physical activity over a week.1 There are plenty of activities you can do from; streaming workouts on line to getting some gardening done or even a brisk house clean.

3. Eat smart. Sticking to a healthy diet and building healthy meals from scratch can be a challenge at the best of times. Sticking to a three meals a day routine and incorporating enough fibre and protein into your meals will keep you fuller for longer. If you like to snack, make sure you have plenty of healthy snacks available.

4. Stay Hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps the body work! It helps the digestive system work more efficiently to process nutrients while removing waste. It also helps the function of the immune system by preventing the buildup of toxins in the kidneys and the liver. The PiMag Waterfall® System takes tap water and filters it through an advanced filtration system reducing contaminants whilst natural minerals help adjust the pH to create alkaline water. Being gravity fed its perfect for any kitchen worktop.2

5. Get creative. Creative play isn’t just for kids. Journalling, sketching and painting are all great ways to boost mood and express yourself. You can start an on line group with your friends such as a book club or a knitting club. Creativity is for all ages, kids, parents and grandparents…

6. Make space for self-care. You can recreate a spa regime in the comfort of your own home. Adopting some self-care rituals around your beauty regime can make a real impact to how you feel. Bubble baths, at-home facials and some well deserved ‘me’ time will not only relax your body, but your mind too! Enjoy a body massage in the comfort of your own home with the Nikken MagCreator®. Relax while this magnetic roller rolls smoothly across and down the back.

7. Ground yourself. There is nothing to perfectly replicate the feeling that we get from soil, grass, sand or even the ocean floor underneath our bare feet, but there is something that comes close in its effect. Unload with the KenkoGround®. A conductive mat that serves to reconnect you with Mother Nature by connecting to the earth’s negative charge and works by reducing and neutralising unwanted positive charge – which our body absorbs from being surrounded by strong sources of electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted from electrical devices such as computers and mobile phones.

All off these activities can help towards maintaining an Active Wellness lifestyle at home.

All the purity of nature at your fingertips…

Spring Hydration Blog Banner

It’s simple: Water is the necessity of Life. Keeping hydrated is crucial for health and wellbeing. Many people do not consume enough fluids each day. Around 60% of the body is made up of water, and around 71% of the planet’s surface is covered by water. To function properly, all the cells and organs of the body need water.

Here are some of the benefits of good hydration for the body:

1. Increases Energy & Relieves Fatigue. Since the brain is mostly made out of water, drinking it helps you to focus, concentrate better and be more alert. As an added bonus, your energy levels are also boosted!

2. Improves Skin Complexion. Good hydration moisturizes the skin, keeps it fresh, soft, glowing and smooth.

3. Helps Maintain the Balance of Body Fluids. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature.

4. Water energises your muscles. Having the right balance of water and electrolytes in your muscles helps them to perform at their best. That’s why it’s important to drink lots of water before doing exercise and to keep your fluid intake high during and after your workout.

5. Water gives your kidneys a helping hand. Your kidneys purify your blood and remove waste products from your body by passing them into your urine. As long as you are fully hydrated, your kidneys are highly effective at removing toxins such as nitrogen from your body.

But, how much water should you drink daily? The National Academies of Sciences recommends for women a total of 2.7 litres of liquid daily, including all beverages and water-rich foods.1   For men, the recommendation is a total of 3.7 litres of liquid daily, including all beverages and water-rich foods.2

Drinking PiMag® filtered water is a critical aspect of an Active Wellness Lifestyle.

Nikken’s PiMag® water systems are designed to take tap water and create the experience of drinking fresh, spring-like water. This is done through a multi-stage process of cleaning mineralising and energising the water in your home or office.

The Nikken PiMag Waterfall® is an advanced filtration system that produces water with added minerals in a pH range of 8.5 – 9.5. Regular tap water typically has a pH range of 6.5 – 8.5, with 7 considered “basic” and below 7 as acidic.3

Because the PiMag Waterfall® works without electricity or plumbing, it can be used in any location.

The Nikken PiMag Waterfall® complies with NSF* standards as follows:

  • NSF Standard 42 – Reduction of chlorine, chloramine, taste and odour
  • NSF Standard 53 – Reduction of mercury, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs)
  • NSF Standard 372 – Lead compliance

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle…

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Blog gc

The most effective way to reduce waste is to not create it in the first place. Making a new product requires a lot of materials and energy – raw materials must be extracted from the earth and the product must be fabricated then transported to wherever it will be sold. As a result, reduction and reuse are the most effective ways you can save natural resources, protect the environment and save money.

Some of the benefits of Reducing and Reusing

  • Prevents pollution caused by reducing the need to harvest new raw materials
  • Saves energy
  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change
  • Helps sustain the environment for future generations
  • Reduces the amount of waste that will need to be recycled or sent to landfills and incinerators

How to Reduce and Reuse

  • Buy used. In most cases, used items can be less expensive and just as good as new.
  • Less packaging. When manufacturers make their products with less packaging, they use fewer raw materials. This reduces waste and costs. Buying in bulk can reduce packaging and save you money.
  • Buy reusable instead of disposable. Look for items that can be reused. For example, you can bring your own cutlery and coffee mug to work, rather than using disposable items.
  • Borrow, rent or share items that are used infrequently, like party decorations, tools or furniture.

Recycling…

Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. Recycling has multiple benefits for many areas of the economy – providing raw materials, creating jobs and encouraging business opportunities and innovation.1

There are many benefits to recycle and all of us can contribute to this just by taking small steps:

  • Find ways of recycling different materials. Many materials can be recycled, such as paper, plastic, metal and glass. Other items such as furniture, electronic equipment, building material and vehicles can also be recycled but many people don’t often think to do so.
  • Buy products that can be recycled. When shopping at the supermarket, look for products that can be recycled easily such as glass jars and tin cans. Avoid plastic!
  • Buy products that have been made from recycled material. You can tell if a product is eco-friendly by looking at the label on the packaging.
  • Make sure you have a recycle bin in your home. Your local council should be able to provide you with a recycle bin that can be used for materials such as glass, paper, aluminium and plastic.
  • Composting – a process where waste degrades into compost, which can then be used in your garden to help it grow. It is an excellent way to recycle garden and kitchen waste such as plant trimmings and leftover food.

Nikken’s bio-green PiMag® Water Bottle is made from patented BioGreen materials. These materials enable the bottle to completely break down in landfills and compost piles into biomass that nourishes soil and biogas that can be harvested for energy use.

What’s the best way to enjoy the autumn months?

Pumpkins

Traditionally, autumn is the colorful harvest season that precedes the cold winter months. The temperature begins to drop and the air becomes dryer as winds blow and leaves fall.

Each change of season is a transitional period in nature and our bodies follow suit even if we are unconscious of what’s happening. Autumn is a time when leaves fall and vegetation is either harvested or dies off. During this natural cycle, mould is released. Even though mould is airborne year round, this extra release can be a stress on the immune system.

Depending on the individual’s state of Active Wellness, the immune system either continues working well or becomes overloaded during autumn. Digestion may not be as smooth and the foods that worked well during the summer may suddenly be overwhelming. Autumn is therefore an ideal time to reduce the toxic load on the immune and digestive systems. In fact, since 60 to 80% of the immune system revolves around the digestive system, the two impact each other a great deal.1

In addition to being the perfect time to incorporate KENZEN Lactoferrin® 2.0 into your daily regimen, here are some things to do that may help decrease toxic overload:

1. Minimise exposure to chemical toxins in the environment or in products you might use on a daily basis, including cosmetics, laundry detergent, cleaners, plastics, air fresheners, etc.

2. Try using unscented cleaners and detergents. Scented products often are full of artificial ingredients that tend to burden the immune and digestive systems.

3. Read labels and try eating food without artificial coloring and preservatives. Processed foods in general may irritate sensitive digestive tracts.

4. Pay attention to food sensitivities. This is a great time of the year to eat foods that warm you up, just as summer was a perfect time to eat cooling salads. A rule of thumb is to heed Nature and eat what grows seasonally such as pumpkins, squash, root vegetables (beets and turnips), dark leafy greens and anything is locally grown.

5. Store your reusable plastic bags and containers in closed cupboards and air-tight containers. Plastics contain petrochemical molecules that are airborne, especially indoors.

6. Drink filtered water. Chlorine is a harsh chemical placed in many municipal water systems. The PiMag Waterfall® exceeds the standard for chlorine reduction and helps households filter tap water and reduce or eliminate the use of bottled water, contributing to the environment. Add the KENZEN® Super Ciaga® to your PiMag® water. A delicious organic mix drink with 100% fruit and a high ORAC value (antioxidant), the Super Ciaga could help towards the maintenance of a strong immune system.

7. To help keep a healthy gut, traditional Chinese medicine recommends eating moistening foods such as tofu, tempeh, spinach, barley, pears, apples, seaweed, mushrooms, almonds and sesame seeds.2

8. Protect your skin from the dryness the elements might cause. Use a moisturiser such as TRUE elements® Marine Organic Youthful Face Cream at night and Nourishing Face Cream during the day.

Try to get plenty of rest and sleep to help keep your immune system happy and enjoy this beautiful season!

How Much Water Do We Need to Drink Daily?

Hydration Blog Banner

Every life form on Earth requires water to survive – but how much do human beings need to drink to be healthy and practicing the Active Wellness lifestyle?.. Well it really depends on the individual and there are a variety of opinions from researchers and health authorities.

The human body is composed of approximately 60% water and we’re constantly losing water from perspiration and other bodily output. We therefore drink water to replenish and prevent dehydration. Water is required for virtually every bodily function, including flushing toxins from organs, carrying nutrients to cells, cushioning joints and helping to digest food.

When the water content in the human body goes below certain levels, we experience the feeling of thirst. When this happens, we reach for water to rehydrate. As simple as that process is, this automatic thirst mechanism becomes less accurate with age, so the older we get, the more conscious we need to be to hydrate throughout the day, even when not feeling thirsty.

Our water requirements vary depending on age, weight, physical activity, general health and the climate we live in. If we live in hot climates, we will perspire more and require more water. If we have a job that requires strenuous labour, we will require more water than someone sitting at a desk in an air-conditioned office. The National Academies of Sciences recommends for women a total of 2.7 litres of liquid daily, including all beverages and water-rich foods.1  For men, the recommendation is a total of 3.7 litres of liquid daily, including all beverages and water-rich foods.2

Similarly, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) also recommends three litres daily for men and two plus litres daily for women. They state that children and teens generally require 1.5 to 2 litres daily, with the addition of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables that are water-rich.During exercise, the goal is to drink between 1/4 – 1/2 litre of water every 15-20 minutes.4

Everyone can benefit from the eco-friendly PiMag® Water Bottle and PiMag Waterfall®. They’re great for Planet Earth and you’ll save money over the years by avoiding the purchase of bottled water!

Inner Health and Outer Beauty in support of Psoriasis Awareness Month…

Blog banner

At Nikken, we like to promote Active Wellness as a way of living. It’s a proactive rather than a reactive approach to life. That means taking measures to maintain health both physically and mentally on an ongoing basis.

Ironically, as we make huge advances in technology, we continue to be confronted with challenges that often have no sure-fire solutions. This is the case with psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects more than 125 million people worldwide.1

No one knows the exact cause of psoriasis, but since August is Psoriasis Awareness Month, it is a good time to learn about it, whether we suffer from outbreaks or not. Researchers believe psoriasis can be triggered by cuts, scrapes or surgery, as well as emotional stress, infections and even certain medications, such as beta-blockers that control blood pressure and antimalarial drugs.2  This skin disorder causes skin cells to multiply 10 times faster than normal, building into bumpy red patches with white scales.3 It’s not contagious but sometimes occurs with members of the same family.

Although not curable, certain precautions can be taken to help prevent flare-ups:

• Stay warm in cold, dry weather. Researchers have shown that psoriasis occurs more often in wintry weather, so limiting the skin’s exposure to the cold is a proactive measure.

• Keep skin moisturized. Dry skin is a trigger and can make scaling more severe. A humidifier may be helpful, especially in winter months. Alternatively, use TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skin Care to cleanse, tone and hydrate skin year round.  All of the Organic TRUE elements® range contains specific formulations of enriching marine extracts and is suitable for sensitive skin.

• Get short, regular bursts of sunlight, because ultraviolet radiation has immunosuppressive effects. UV light therapy is a known treatment option for psoriasis.  Remember to always take care in the sunlight!

• Make sure to get enough Vitamin D, since a deficiency is common in people with psoriasis.

• Reduce stress. Reports suggest that stress may trigger flare-ups in 68% of adults with psoriaris.4 Practice yoga and meditation to ease stress.

• Eat a whole food diet that includes nuts and seeds, since they contain good fats, which may help improve skin health. Avoid food that is known to be inflammatory, especially processed carbohydrates and anything with lots of added sugar.

• Stay hydrated. Dehydration is found among people with psoriasis, especially females 60 years of age and older.5 Keep a PiMag Waterfall® in your kitchen for cooking purposes as well as drinking and take a PiMag® Water Bottle with you everywhere!

• Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in fish and flax seeds may help to reduce inflammation and assist skin health.  Kasai Omega Oils is rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6 as well as Borage Oil, known for treating hair and skin conditions.

All the precautions mentioned above may help those trying to prevent psoriasis flare-ups. They also are part of the Active Wellness approach to wellbeing for anyone seeking to maintain or improve health—physically and mentally.
