Get into the zone with Reflexology

Reflexology’s increasing popularity at present seems to derive from its reputation for dealing with stress and tension and in promoting relaxation.

Reflexology, otherwise known as ‘zone therapy’, is a type of therapy that uses gentle pressure on specific points along your feet (and sometimes the hands or ears) to help ease stress and assist your body in working better.1  Because of the close interaction of mind and body, relaxing one will help unwind the other too.

Many people confuse massage with reflexology, but it’s actually more comparable to acupressure. Reflexology connects spots on the outside of your body to the inside – different areas of the feet are linked to specific body parts, and putting pressure on one area of the foot can have an effect on the organ it corresponds with:

  • Tops of each toe = head/brain
  • Balls of your feet = heart, chest, and lungs
  • Arch of your foot = liver, pancreas, and kidney
  • Heels = lower back and gut system

Here’s how it works: A foot is divided into five zones that run from toe to heel: The big toe is zone 1, and the little toe is zone 5. The body is divided into 10 zones that run from head to foot. Zone 1 aligns with the left and right center of the body, and zone 5 aligns with the left and right sides of the body. When you place pressure on zone 1 in the foot, it can help relieve discomforts in the part of the body that’s linked to that area. Pretty cool, right?

The average benefits of reflexology include stress relief, relaxation and increased energy.

So, how exactly does reflexology provide all these benefits? One theory that dates back to the 19th century suggests that reflexology works by stimulating the nervous system. Pressing on areas of the feet in a calming way stimulates the nerves there, which sends a message to the central nervous system. This helps to relax the body and has positive effects on your breathing, blood flow, immune response and more.

If you can’t find a reflexologist near you, try a DIY session! Here’s what you need to know about how to use a foot reflexology chart2.

  • Any foot reflexology chart will have the major reflex areas marked (usually with bold colors).
  • You’ll find the names of the different organs/body parts that correspond to each reflex area labeled. It should be easy to locate which is which.
  • To recreate a mini reflexology session at home, use a small amount of lotion to massage your feet. Apply pressure with the ball of your thumb, holding for 5 to 10 seconds.
  • If you don’t know where to start, try your heel and move on from there, applying steady, even pressure with your thumb.
  • Before your first DIY foot reflexology session, familiarize yourself with the basic areas on a foot reflexology chart.

KenkoInsoles are Nikken’s founding product, derived from research into the effects of magnetic fields, with an added reflexological component inspired by the reflexology practices in Japan and the pebbles on the floor of the traditional baths.

The current Nikken insoles continue to be popular products in the range: Kenko mSteps, with raised nodules for a gentle massaging sensation as you walk, and Kenko mStrides, a high density insole with magnetic technology.

Disclaimer: Any new pain symptom or medical condition should be discussed with your doctor before receiving reflexology treatments.

The Circulatory System: An amazing circuit that keeps our bodies going…

Proper circulation is key for maintaining optimal health. It ensures that blood and oxygen continuously flow throughout the body, allowing every organ to function properly. It helps to heal wounds faster, it keeps the brain sharp, it keeps the heart healthy and it even gives the complexion a natural glow.1  Therefore, it’s vital to look after our circulatory system as part of our active wellness.

Top tips for circulatory health include exercising for 30 minutes a day, most days of the week as well as maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle. Here are 7 further tips that are easy to incorporate in your daily routine!

1. Get More Omegas… Omega-3 fatty acids help improve blood flow in the body and are an excellent source for heart health. Omegas can be found in certain types of fish such as mackerel.  For those who are vegetarian or vegan, kale also contains a small amount of omega-3 fatty acid. There are many natural supplements that contain Omega-3.

2. Sip Smarter… Drink black or green tea. A 2001 study, published in the journal Circulation, found that black tea improves blood vessel health. The antioxidants in these teas help to increase the width of the blood vessels. This enables the body to pump blood more easily.

3. Quit Smoking… So, this one isn’t easy. But, it’s absolutely necessary! Nicotine causes the blood vessels to constrict or narrow, which limits the amount of blood that flows to the organs. Over time, the constant constriction results in blood vessels that become stiff and less elastic. Constricted blood vessels decrease the amount of oxygen and nutrients the body cells receive.

4. Get Iron-Strong… If you don’t have enough red blood cells to circulate oxygen throughout your body, then you’re considered anemic. Women are especially susceptible to becoming anemic, especially if they are pregnant. Consuming an iron-rich diet such as spinach, legumes and red meat (in moderation) can greatly help you increase your red blood cells.

5. Compression for Comfort… Compression socks are a staple of any runner, but they should be in every household regardless of athletic ability.  That’s because these special socks reduce swelling in the legs. If you keep your legs elevated when you wear them, it will put pressure on the feet to help blood vessels push blood through the upper body and up to the heart.

6. Brush Your Body… If you’ve never heard of dry brushing before, you are seriously missing out on a relaxing and stimulating way to increase your blood flow! Before taking a shower or bath, use a soft-bristle brush and gently brush your skin in long, upward strokes. Start at your feet, and then move to your legs, thighs, stomach and arms. It not only feels amazing, it will help increase your circulation instantly.

7. Ease into Exercise… Sitting too much and for too long can be detrimental to your body. Your circulation system is no exception. Any type of movement is good, including a gentle walk, but experts say a good high-impact activity is jogging/running, and a good low-impact activity is yoga. Movements that involve bending, stretching and twisting help to compress and decompress a person’s veins, which may help improve circulation.2

Whether in doors, taking a gentle stroll outside or for more active exercise, Nikken’s Kenko mSteps and Kenko mStrides insoles can help energize your feet!

Over Four Decades of Active Wellness – The History of Nikken magnets…

While many of us may not be familiar with the uses of magnetics, they have been used successfully for centuries in other parts of the world. Naturally produced magnets are called Lodestones and were used in ancient China, Japan, India, Egypt and Greece to help people enjoy better health.

Nikken have been researching and developing magnetic technologies since 1975 with the launch of the first Magnetic Insoles – KenkoInsoles. Nikken’s founder, Mr. Isamu Masuda began his wellness revolution with a brilliant thought: “If people feel better after walking on pebbles, why not create a way to experience this effect all day long?”

Drawing inspiration from the combined research into the positive effects of magnetic fields and massage inspired by the reflexology practices and the pebbles on the floors of the traditional Japanese hot baths – he combined a textured surface with magnetic technology and this is how the Magsteps® (later called KenkoInsoles) were created.

Since then, Nikken’s research teams have continued the process of research and found that the more complex the magnetic fields, the more effective they are on the body. As a consequence, a number of further developments designed and adapted for different applications are now available.

Kenko mSteps – a gentle massage in your shoe!

Raised nodules on the surface of mSteps are designed to provide a very gentle massaging sensation on the soles of the feet. Walking, standing or sitting, these nodules will stimulate and invigorate your feet.

Patented DynaFlux® Magnetic Technology acts like a magnetic field generator inside the shoes. This happens when magnets are placed in a way called ‘polar opposites’ – as you walk, the components of the magnets move, changing position to produce a dynamic field of energy.

mSteps are available in two sizes: 2.5 – 7 (#3053) and 6.5 – 11.5 (3054). The insoles can be trimmed if needed to fit perfectly in your shoes.

The Kenko mStrides – great for active activity!

Kenko mStrides have the same patented DynaFlux® Magnetic Technology as the Kenko mSteps but without the massaging nodules.

They are thicker to provide more cushion and flexibility, ideal for use in soft athletic shoes such as trainers and hiking boots, etc.

Kenko mStrides are also available in two sizes: 2 – 7 (#3050) and 6.5 – 11.5 (#3051), these insoles can also be trimmed if needed to fit perfectly in your shoes.

Whichever insoles you choose this summer, you can comfortably walk your way to Active Wellness!

Nikken Year End Message from the CEO…

Another year has come to an end, and what a year it’s been! The year 2020 has been unusual, challenging and full of surprises. It has made us realize how much changes every second and every hour of every day. How we learn from this nonstop flux and how we shift accordingly is up to us.

How Nikken adapts to change is by remembering its origins. A father’s love for his son and his desire to improve their situation was the source of ingenuity and innovation. With the spirit of service and dedication to help not only themselves but also the situation of many others, a successful business was born. That business evolved into an entrepreneurial approach that has been repeated for more than 45 years now.

Each time a person joins Nikken, our Global Wellness Community expands to include another human who embraces transformation and Active Wellness. Whether it’s a mother or father who wants to create a better future for their families, a student who wants to help pay for college tuition, a grandmother who continues as caretaker for her family—Nikken provides a way to help them transform and improve their lives, based on a legacy of service and self-development.

Nikken continues to evolve, and this past year we received powerful affirmation that we are on the right path. Due to Covid 19, we confronted many unforeseen obstacles in manufacturing—shortage of raw materials, shipping delays from around the world, congested ports, keeping our staff safe, factory shutdowns—and we persevered and made it work. We made it work with our infrastructure. We made it work with the patience and trust of our Global Wellness Community.

Our staff began operating from their homes, our warehouses did their best to keep product flowing, and commissions continued being sent out to our Consultants. We keep moving forward in support of the livelihoods of those who share Nikken products and our communal spirit.

At Nikken, we pledge to serve our Global Wellness Community—as individuals, families and societies. We pledge to serve you with the best intentions and the purpose of caring for each other and those who are yet to join us. We are so grateful for your trust, and we will work even harder for you by producing great products, pricing strategies, updated web experiences and intriguing workshops in Humans Being More. 2021 shows so much promise of better things to come.

From the heart of Nikken, we wish you a Healthy and Happy New Year!

The Science of SLEEP…

It’s that time again… the clocks will go back one hour on Sunday 25th October at 2 am!  Daylight Savings Time officially comes to an end.

How do you remember which way the clocks go? An easy way to remember is to think of the seasons; in the Spring, the clocks ‘spring forward’ and in Autumn they ‘fall back’. This also marks the end of British Summer Time (BST)… which also means an extra hour in bed!

With this change you might be looking forward to getting an extra hour of sleep at night – but the amount of rest you’ll get will depend in part on your sleep habits:

The deep sleeper… If you are the type of person who doesn’t wake up until your alarm clock rings, you might get some extra rest, but only if you continue to go to bed at your normal time every night.

The early riser… If you are a morning person who tends to wake up without an alarm, you might get less than an extra hour of sleep. The reason is simple… it could take several days or more for your body’s internal clock to adjust to the change.

The body’s internal clock or circadian rhythms

“Circadian” means “about a day.” This is the body’s internal clock, which gradually becomes established during the first months of life, controls the daily ups and downs of biological patterns, including body temperature, blood pressure, and the release of hormones. Circadian rhythms make people’s desire for sleep strongest between midnight and early morning, but less mid-afternoon.

When you sleep, you cycle between the REM and non-REM sleep stages:

REM: Dreaming sleep or REM sleep – this happens usually 90 minutes after you fall asleep. The first period of REM typically lasts 10 minutes. Your heart rate and breathing gets faster. During this stage of sleep, you could experience more intense dreams because your brain is more active.

Non-REM: Quiet sleep or non-REM sleep (non-rapid eye movement) is basically dreamless sleep. During this stage the breathing and heart rate are slow and regular, the blood pressure is low and the sleeper is relatively still. This is broken up in three stages with each stage becoming progressively deeper. 1

You’ll need to experience all stages of sleep in order to wake up fully rested.

After a good night’s sleep, the benefits can be felt not only in our body, but also in our mind. Sleep is essential for maintaining cognitive skills such as communicating well, remembering key information and being creative and flexible in thought. There is also a strong relationship between sleep and physical and mental health. Not getting enough sleep has a profound impact on our ability to function.

At Nikken we know how important sleep is for Active Wellness and that’s why we’ve designed a range of products that work in harmony together to address just this.

For cosy nights, the KenkoDream® Quilt is made from a natural, anti-bacterial, breathable cotton cover and contains ceramic fibres that not only help release excess heat, but also release a calming warmth to help maintain a constant temperature.

The same ceramic fibres can be found in the limited edition Kenko Travel Comforter, a superlight versatile blanket that can be folded and zipped up after use into a neat portable size making it easy to store and giving it multiple uses not just for the bed but also as a blanket for the sofa, to be kept and used in the car and for when travelling.

These products are just a couple that can be found in the Sleep and Rest & Relaxation range – visit www.nikken.com/eu/ for the full range.

Help Keep Our Beaches and Oceans Clean

frank-mckenna-OD9EOzfSOh0-unsplash

Healthy oceans are the life support system for our planet providing 97% of the Earths livable habitat. In order to help keep our oceans and marine life sustainable, we need to keep our beaches clean.

Beaches are home to many creatures that depend on both land and sea to survive. Even sea creatures that live solely in the water are affected by polluted beaches when rubbish that accumulates on the beach is washed out with the tides. In addition to plastic and paper rubbish, chemical and human wastes on the beach also wash out to sea.

Plastic pollution impacts virtually every living organism in, or thriving off of, the oceans of our world.1 (https://nikkeneurope.wordpress.com/2018/04/09/rethink-plastic/). Today many sea creatures that are found dead often have huge amounts of plastic debris in their internal organs.

Every person who visits a beach in any part of the world can help keep our beaches and oceans clean. We each can commit to making a difference and educating our children, so they can practice green behaviors from an early age. If you haven’t already started, this summer is a great time to take action:

  1. “Take 3 for the Sea” is an organization that teaches people to take three pieces of rubbish with you when you leave the beach or any waterway. By doing so, you will have made a difference. Participation in this program has burgeoned to 129 countries with 300,000 people educated in helping to make plastic pollution a thing of the past.2
  2. Don’t drink bottled water. (https://nikkeneurope.wordpress.com/2019/06/03/stay-hydrated-the-smart-way/) More than one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute around the world. 3 They require large amounts of energy and water to produce, then end up clogging landfills.
  3. Use re-usable alternatives to plastic bottles. You can buy re-usable water bottles everywhere, but you can only purchase the PiMag®Water Bottle with the nano-technology filter system at Nikken. At home, you can make a difference by drinking filtered water from a PiMag Waterfall® – good for Active Wellness as well as minimizing your personal carbon footprint.
  4. Use re-usable tote bags and containers. Avoid buying food and other items wrapped in plastic. For example, when buying fresh food, buy whole fruit and vegetables instead of pre-cut, prepackaged versions wrapped in plastic. Carry out with your own totes.
  5. Decrease chemical usage as much as possible. Pesticides, fertilizers and weed killers are harmful for our oceans—the closer you live to the sea, the more likely those chemicals will end up there. About 245,000 square kilometers (about the size of the UK) are known as “dead zones” where marine life cannot survive, due to chemical poisons in the eco-system.
  6. Opt for mineral sunscreens or non-nano zinc oxide as the primary active ingredient. Chemicals such as oxybenzone and octinoxate that are commonly found in popular sunscreens are not eco-friendly. Once these chemicals make their way off beach bodies into the ocean, they can damage coral DNA. Sunscreens without these damaging chemicals are called “reef-safe.” 4
  7. Be careful what you flush down the toilet. Medicines have been detected in ground water and marine life. For example, 4500 wet wipes were found in a 154 square-meter portion of the River Thames in London in 2017, an example of what doesn’t break down in the flushing process. 5

Share your knowledge of eco-friendly habits with friends and family. The more people who commit to making a difference, the better chance we have of maintaining the lives of our beaches and oceans.

Heart Health…

Kenko Heart Launch GC

Heart health is important at any age. If you’re young, you might think you have years or even decades before it’s time to worry about heart disease. But heart health merits your attention at any age.

The number of young people suffering strokes is “rising dramatically”, according to the Stroke Association1. The average age of stroke victims has been falling in recent years and predicts the number of 45-year-olds and above being affected will increase by 59% by 2035.

Keeping your heart healthy is a critical aspect of Active Wellness at any age.

Here are some tips to help keep your normal heart function healthy:

  • Aim for seven hours of sleep. According to WebMD, adults who slept soundly for seven hours a night had less calcium in their arteries (an early sign of heart disease) than those who slept less than five hours or more than nine hours.Nikken Naturest® and Kenko Sleep Products can help support restful sleep.
  • Get your blood pressure checked regularly. Get your blood pressured checked every three to five years if you’re between the ages of 18 and 40; and annually if you’re over 40.
  • Develop healthy eating habits. Focus on vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean protein. Limit salt, sugar, saturated fats and alcohol. One of the fastest ways to clean up your diet is to cut out sugary beverages such as soda.KENZEN Super Ciaga® is a 100% juice drink containing no added sugar, preservatives or artificial flavourings.
  • Get your blood sugar tested regularly. Millions of people have diabetes and aren’t aware of it until they suffer from a cardiovascular event. Diabetes adds to the risk of heart disease.
  • Exercise regularly. Monika Sanghavi, Assistant Professor of Cardiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center says, “We now know that even if you exercise for 30 minutes a day, being sedentary for the other 23.5 hours could be bad for your heart.”Break up long periods of sitting by standing or walking intermittently.
  • If you smoke, quit. Don’t replace tobacco with e-cigarettes. They may not have the harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke, but they still contain nicotine.

Spring in your steps…

ENG Blog banner - 26th March

Spring is well and truly here! It’s time to come out of winter hibernation mode and make some positive changes to your wellbeing.

Here are just a couple of ideas to get you started.

Go for a walk everyday. As you stride out, focus on all the good things you feel most grateful for. After that, take a mental note of how you feel. This simple technique will give you a sense of wellbeing.

Wear the mStrides while you walk. With mStrides in place, walking helps create a dynamic energy flow — in effect, a magnetic field generator inside shoes. Whether at home or in a non-physical activity job, the Kenko mSteps can also help you achieve the same sense of wellbeing as the mStrides with the added feature of relaxing massage nodes. Raised surface points provide the refreshing sensation of a foot massage when walking, standing or sitting — all day.

Take care of your feet. A good quality pair of socks is essential when you walk whether it is a short distance or a longer one.

Benefiting from high-quality cotton blend for comfort and durability, the ThermoWear Golf Socks are designed to help keep your feet comfortable no matter where your steps are taking you. Whether you are playing sport, planning to attend the British Masters Golf European Tour in April or just planning your trip away for the Easter holidays, the ThermoWear Golf Socks could help offer your feet that added comfort and a positive sense of wellbeing.

Nature has a way of making people feel calm, and exercising outside can strengthen that effect. It also becomes a major distraction from all the stresses of life.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that engaging in regular physical activity improves mental and physical health, which is why health organisations, such as the UK Department of Health, recommend adults engage in a minimum 150 minutes of physical activity per week.

The benefits of exposure to natural environments and regular exercise has led to suggestions that there may be an added benefit of exercising outdoors beyond the benefits experienced when exercising in an indoor environment.

Social interaction is yet another great benefit of getting out there as people tend to interact more with others when outdoors. And last but not least, Vitamin D… it’s well known that increased exposure to sunlight may help increase levels of vitamin D. This vitamin is very important for the immune function and also for the maintenance of bone growth and repair.

This spring, walk your way to your wellbeing!
