Help Keep Our Beaches and Oceans Clean

frank-mckenna-OD9EOzfSOh0-unsplash

Healthy oceans are the life support system for our planet providing 97% of the Earths livable habitat. In order to help keep our oceans and marine life sustainable, we need to keep our beaches clean.

Beaches are home to many creatures that depend on both land and sea to survive. Even sea creatures that live solely in the water are affected by polluted beaches when rubbish that accumulates on the beach is washed out with the tides. In addition to plastic and paper rubbish, chemical and human wastes on the beach also wash out to sea.

Plastic pollution impacts virtually every living organism in, or thriving off of, the oceans of our world.1 (https://nikkeneurope.wordpress.com/2018/04/09/rethink-plastic/). Today many sea creatures that are found dead often have huge amounts of plastic debris in their internal organs.

Every person who visits a beach in any part of the world can help keep our beaches and oceans clean. We each can commit to making a difference and educating our children, so they can practice green behaviors from an early age. If you haven’t already started, this summer is a great time to take action:

  1. “Take 3 for the Sea” is an organization that teaches people to take three pieces of rubbish with you when you leave the beach or any waterway. By doing so, you will have made a difference. Participation in this program has burgeoned to 129 countries with 300,000 people educated in helping to make plastic pollution a thing of the past.2
  2. Don’t drink bottled water. (https://nikkeneurope.wordpress.com/2019/06/03/stay-hydrated-the-smart-way/) More than one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute around the world. 3 They require large amounts of energy and water to produce, then end up clogging landfills.
  3. Use re-usable alternatives to plastic bottles. You can buy re-usable water bottles everywhere, but you can only purchase the PiMag®Water Bottle with the nano-technology filter system at Nikken. At home, you can make a difference by drinking filtered water from a PiMag Waterfall® – good for Active Wellness as well as minimizing your personal carbon footprint.
  4. Use re-usable tote bags and containers. Avoid buying food and other items wrapped in plastic. For example, when buying fresh food, buy whole fruit and vegetables instead of pre-cut, prepackaged versions wrapped in plastic. Carry out with your own totes.
  5. Decrease chemical usage as much as possible. Pesticides, fertilizers and weed killers are harmful for our oceans—the closer you live to the sea, the more likely those chemicals will end up there. About 245,000 square kilometers (about the size of the UK) are known as “dead zones” where marine life cannot survive, due to chemical poisons in the eco-system.
  6. Opt for mineral sunscreens or non-nano zinc oxide as the primary active ingredient. Chemicals such as oxybenzone and octinoxate that are commonly found in popular sunscreens are not eco-friendly. Once these chemicals make their way off beach bodies into the ocean, they can damage coral DNA. Sunscreens without these damaging chemicals are called “reef-safe.” 4
  7. Be careful what you flush down the toilet. Medicines have been detected in ground water and marine life. For example, 4500 wet wipes were found in a 154 square-meter portion of the River Thames in London in 2017, an example of what doesn’t break down in the flushing process. 5

Share your knowledge of eco-friendly habits with friends and family. The more people who commit to making a difference, the better chance we have of maintaining the lives of our beaches and oceans.

Heart Health…

Kenko Heart Launch GC

Heart health is important at any age. If you’re young, you might think you have years or even decades before it’s time to worry about heart disease. But heart health merits your attention at any age.

The number of young people suffering strokes is “rising dramatically”, according to the Stroke Association1. The average age of stroke victims has been falling in recent years and predicts the number of 45-year-olds and above being affected will increase by 59% by 2035.

Keeping your heart healthy is a critical aspect of Active Wellness at any age.

Here are some tips to help keep your normal heart function healthy:

  • Aim for seven hours of sleep. According to WebMD, adults who slept soundly for seven hours a night had less calcium in their arteries (an early sign of heart disease) than those who slept less than five hours or more than nine hours.Nikken Naturest® and Kenko Sleep Products can help support restful sleep.
  • Get your blood pressure checked regularly. Get your blood pressured checked every three to five years if you’re between the ages of 18 and 40; and annually if you’re over 40.
  • Develop healthy eating habits. Focus on vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean protein. Limit salt, sugar, saturated fats and alcohol. One of the fastest ways to clean up your diet is to cut out sugary beverages such as soda.KENZEN Super Ciaga® is a 100% juice drink containing no added sugar, preservatives or artificial flavourings.
  • Get your blood sugar tested regularly. Millions of people have diabetes and aren’t aware of it until they suffer from a cardiovascular event. Diabetes adds to the risk of heart disease.
  • Exercise regularly. Monika Sanghavi, Assistant Professor of Cardiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center says, “We now know that even if you exercise for 30 minutes a day, being sedentary for the other 23.5 hours could be bad for your heart.”Break up long periods of sitting by standing or walking intermittently.
  • If you smoke, quit. Don’t replace tobacco with e-cigarettes. They may not have the harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke, but they still contain nicotine.

The value of water…

Facebook banner Blog launch - ENG

Whilst planet Earth is primarily covered in water, only 3% of it is fresh! Yet this 3% provides the worlds drinking water and delivers food through fishing and crop irrigation, along with many other key functions. The world’s water supply is a major concern and it’s not just plants and animals that are at risk.  Issues of water scarcity and poor water quality could have serious social and economic consequences too.1

Life is full of things we can’t control, but there are conscious decisions we can make and follow through on. Living with Active Wellness is within our personal control and drinking PiMag® filtered water is a positive step towards Active Wellness.

The new Water Pack, launched as part of the Wellness Home Packs range on 1st August, can help address the maintenance of an Active Wellness lifestyle in light of the worlds increasing water concern. Each Water Pack contains advanced water filtration products including:

Spring in your steps…

ENG Blog banner - 26th March

Spring is well and truly here! It’s time to come out of winter hibernation mode and make some positive changes to your wellbeing.

Here are just a couple of ideas to get you started.

Go for a walk everyday. As you stride out, focus on all the good things you feel most grateful for. After that, take a mental note of how you feel. This simple technique will give you a sense of wellbeing.

Wear the mStrides while you walk. With mStrides in place, walking helps create a dynamic energy flow — in effect, a magnetic field generator inside shoes. Whether at home or in a non-physical activity job, the Kenko mSteps can also help you achieve the same sense of wellbeing as the mStrides with the added feature of relaxing massage nodes. Raised surface points provide the refreshing sensation of a foot massage when walking, standing or sitting — all day.

Take care of your feet. A good quality pair of socks is essential when you walk whether it is a short distance or a longer one.

Benefiting from high-quality cotton blend for comfort and durability, the ThermoWear Golf Socks are designed to help keep your feet comfortable no matter where your steps are taking you. Whether you are playing sport, planning to attend the British Masters Golf European Tour in April or just planning your trip away for the Easter holidays, the ThermoWear Golf Socks could help offer your feet that added comfort and a positive sense of wellbeing.

Nature has a way of making people feel calm, and exercising outside can strengthen that effect. It also becomes a major distraction from all the stresses of life.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that engaging in regular physical activity improves mental and physical health, which is why health organisations, such as the UK Department of Health, recommend adults engage in a minimum 150 minutes of physical activity per week.

The benefits of exposure to natural environments and regular exercise has led to suggestions that there may be an added benefit of exercising outdoors beyond the benefits experienced when exercising in an indoor environment.

Social interaction is yet another great benefit of getting out there as people tend to interact more with others when outdoors. And last but not least, Vitamin D… it’s well known that increased exposure to sunlight may help increase levels of vitamin D. This vitamin is very important for the immune function and also for the maintenance of bone growth and repair.

This spring, walk your way to your wellbeing!

22nd March 2018 is World Water Day

Water banner

To coincide with this day, we are also focusing on water and running a promotion on a select number of Nikken PiMag® water products…

Nikken PiMag Waterfall® and PiMag® Water Bottlemore than just another water filter product…

Filtered water is probably the best option for drinking. According to the Food and Water Watch Organization, water filters can even be more cost effective than bottled water, especially when evaluating costs over a 5, 10 and 20 – year period.1 Plus kinder to the environment.

Experts recommend looking for a water filter that satisfies the standards of NSF International, a non-profit organization that conducts safety testing for food and water industries. Look specifically for what type of contaminants the water filter will remove.

The PiMag Waterfall® complies with NSF standards as follows:

  • NSF Standard 42 – Reduction of chlorine, chloramine, taste and odor
  • NSF Standard 53 – Reduction of mercury, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs)
  • NSF Standard 372 – Lead compliance

The PiMag Waterfall® is an advanced filtration system that produces water with added minerals in a pH range of 8.5 – 9.5. Regular tap water typically has a pH range of 6.5 – 8.5, with 7 considered “basic” and below 7 as acidic. 2

Because the PiMag Waterfall® works without electricity or plumbing, it can be used in any location. As with all PiMag® products, the Waterfall and Water Bottle is made with recyclable and biodegradable materials.

Replacement Filters – The filter in the PiMag Waterfall® Gravity System and PiMag® Water Bottle is at its optimum for approximately three months (or approximately 250 refills for the bottle). It should then be replaced to continue to create fresh PiMag® water.

Sign your customers up to receive future filter purchases on Autoship. They will receive fresh PiMag Waterfall® Pack Filters (#1381) or PiMag® Water Bottle Filters (#1376) when they need them; whilst also receiving the Autoship discount!

Just good food…

just good food

Choosing food that is good for you and also tastes delicious is easy… Here are five foods that are nutrient dense, versatile, tasty and easy to incorporate into an Active Wellness regimen.

Green tea: Catechins make this beverage a super beverage. Catechins are antioxidants that may help and aid in weight loss. A study published in The Journal of Nutrition found that exercisers who drank four to five cups of green tea daily and worked out for 25 minutes or more lost more belly fat than counterparts who did not drink green tea.

Swap your regular coffee or tea for Kenzen Ten4® Matcha Green Tea Drink. Formulated with top quality matcha green tea powder, this formulation eliminates brewing and is simply stirred for a quick hot or cold refreshing drink.

Almonds: A great source of mono and polyunsaturated fats, almonds contain fewer calories than most other types of nuts, along with fiber and vitamin E. The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition printed a study that found almonds to be helpful in burning fat and carbs during workouts.

Legumes: Weight management experts often recommend a high-protein diet to help lose and maintain weight. Vegetarians and vegans often find it easier to reach protein intake goals by eating lots of legumes (lentils, chickpeas, peas, beans, etc.) or adding a supplement such as pea protein. Pea protein’s high levels of branched-chain amino acids are believed to make it exceptionally beneficial for muscle mass preservation and stimulation of fat loss. Pea protein powder is among the most hypoallergenic of protein powders, as it contains no gluten or dairy. See KVB®.

Broccoli: Only 30 calories per serving, this cruciferous vegetable is a substantial source of calcium and antioxidants. Because it is high in fiber, you don’t need to eat a huge amount to feel full. Since calcium is found largely in dairy products, broccoli is a viable alternative. A versatile veggie, you can incorporate it into stir fries, boil, steam or eat it raw in salads or as crudite.

Brown rice: Filling but low in calories, brown rice is a staple in Active Wellness households. It’s full of fiber and a source of phytonutrients. Legumes, brown rice and broccoli are easy to cook and eat, but if you want to forgo pots and pans, you can simply make a protein shake with KVB® Natural Food Mix. In either vanilla or chocolate flavour, it contains organic pea protein as its primary ingredient and also has organic broccoli and organic rice protein, among many other beneficial ingredients, such as MCTs, organic chlorella and organic cilantro. KVB® is a healthy meal replacement mix. For a tasty alternative mix with Almond or Coconut Milk, add fresh berries and blend, or Ciaga®v for a tailored flavour. KVB® is organic based and suitable for vegans.

Kenzen Ten4® Matcha Green Tea Drink is a matcha green tea based drink which also contains organic brown rice solids – bringing you all the benefits of brown rice in a convenient drink that you can enjoy every day.

With convenience provided by Nikken Wellness nutritional supplements, healthy eating has never been simpler.
