Inner Health and Outer Beauty in support of Psoriasis Awareness Month…

Blog banner

At Nikken, we like to promote Active Wellness as a way of living. It’s a proactive rather than a reactive approach to life. That means taking measures to maintain health both physically and mentally on an ongoing basis.

Ironically, as we make huge advances in technology, we continue to be confronted with challenges that often have no sure-fire solutions. This is the case with psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects more than 125 million people worldwide.1

No one knows the exact cause of psoriasis, but since August is Psoriasis Awareness Month, it is a good time to learn about it, whether we suffer from outbreaks or not. Researchers believe psoriasis can be triggered by cuts, scrapes or surgery, as well as emotional stress, infections and even certain medications, such as beta-blockers that control blood pressure and antimalarial drugs.2  This skin disorder causes skin cells to multiply 10 times faster than normal, building into bumpy red patches with white scales.3 It’s not contagious but sometimes occurs with members of the same family.

Although not curable, certain precautions can be taken to help prevent flare-ups:

• Stay warm in cold, dry weather. Researchers have shown that psoriasis occurs more often in wintry weather, so limiting the skin’s exposure to the cold is a proactive measure.

• Keep skin moisturized. Dry skin is a trigger and can make scaling more severe. A humidifier may be helpful, especially in winter months. Alternatively, use TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skin Care to cleanse, tone and hydrate skin year round.  All of the Organic TRUE elements® range contains specific formulations of enriching marine extracts and is suitable for sensitive skin.

• Get short, regular bursts of sunlight, because ultraviolet radiation has immunosuppressive effects. UV light therapy is a known treatment option for psoriasis.  Remember to always take care in the sunlight!

• Make sure to get enough Vitamin D, since a deficiency is common in people with psoriasis.

• Reduce stress. Reports suggest that stress may trigger flare-ups in 68% of adults with psoriaris.4 Practice yoga and meditation to ease stress.

• Eat a whole food diet that includes nuts and seeds, since they contain good fats, which may help improve skin health. Avoid food that is known to be inflammatory, especially processed carbohydrates and anything with lots of added sugar.

• Stay hydrated. Dehydration is found among people with psoriasis, especially females 60 years of age and older.5 Keep a PiMag Waterfall® in your kitchen for cooking purposes as well as drinking and take a PiMag® Water Bottle with you everywhere!

• Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in fish and flax seeds may help to reduce inflammation and assist skin health.  Kasai Omega Oils is rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6 as well as Borage Oil, known for treating hair and skin conditions.

All the precautions mentioned above may help those trying to prevent psoriasis flare-ups. They also are part of the Active Wellness approach to wellbeing for anyone seeking to maintain or improve health—physically and mentally.

Our Planet’s Most Important Living Plants are Tiny but Mighty…

Sea Blog banner

Marine scientists and ecologists consider living plants to be the most important living organisms on the planet. The almighty single cell alga produces about 50 % of the oxygen used on Earth and our lives essentially depend on it. Algae (plural for alga), paved the way for the evolution of other single-celled organisms as well as those with multiple and/or complex cells, known as eukaryotes.

Algae come in many forms and have an interesting array of uses. They are susceptible to environmental change which makes them excellent indicators of water quality. For example, an overgrowth of algae (known as algal blooms) can clog water intake pipes and filters. Once algal blooms die off, a substantial amount of dissolved oxygen is used by bacteria to break down the organic matter, depleting oxygen levels in their water habitat; this condition is known as hypoxia. In other words, aquatic ecosystems depend on algae to provide oxygen.

Aside from its formidable environmental impact, different types of algae – often known as seaweed – are sources of sustainable biofuel and found in common food items as well as cosmetics. Different forms of algae have varying commercial value – less known but economically important are algae used for fertilizer, feed for farm animals and fish. As soil-binding agents, algae are important in the healthy formation of soil to protect against natural processes such as erosion.2

Algae are an important source of nourishment in numerous cultures around the world. Most of us are aware of nori, Japanese seaweed used to prepare sushi. Chinese incorporate kelp into cold dishes that are served as appetizers or sides and into hot soups.

Not only is algae considered by many consumers worldwide to be a low cost source of protein, but it also provides a number of important minerals such as iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium, manganese, and zinc. Algae also contain several healthy elements including carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and vitamins A, B, C, and E3; a perfect food to incorporate into an Active Wellness lifestyle.

The chlorophyll, produced in the algae, contributes to the oxygen supply of the skin as it is similar in composition to hemoglobin. Especially effective in skin care products, green algae have an amino acid content similar to human collagen. The TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare line is formulated with various combinations of seaweed extracts, namely Chondrus Crispus (red algae or Irish moss), Laminaria Digitata (brown algae, Oarweed, Irish seaweed or kelp), Ulva Lactuca (sea lettuce) and Crithmum maritimum L. (sea fennel). Containing minerals, trace elements and marine micronutrients, these seaweed extracts in the TRUE elements® Ecocert certified skincare line help to gently cleanse, tone, hydrate and prevent signs of premature aging.

Let’s Go Green…

Going Green Blog banner

As we become more educated about how to help sustain planet Earth, our habits and even the language we use, evolve. Going “green” is being redefined as we learn about alternatives and possibilities.

The terms “green” or “sustainable” often refer to products, services or practices that allow for economic development while conserving for future generations.  A product is considered green if it has “less of an environmental impact or is less detrimental to human health than the traditional product equivalent.” 1

No product is 100% green, since everything we dispose of will eventually impact the environment in some way. According to Sustainable Earth, green products are:

  • Energy efficient, durable and often have low maintenance requirements.
  • Free of Ozone depleting chemicals, toxic compounds and don’t produce toxic by-products.
  • Often made of recycled materials or content or from renewable and sustainable sources.
  • Obtained from local manufacturers or resources.
  • Biodegradable or easily reused either in part or as a whole.

We can each contribute to sustainability in small ways. Most of us know about the 3Rs: REDUCE, RECYCLE, REUSE. Practicing the 3Rs means we are going green by decreasing wastefulness, minimizing the accumulation of consumables and sharing with our communities.

Other ways of going green include using energy saving light bulbs, improving house insulation, installing solar panels, driving hybrid cars, eating less red meat, composting and using less plastic. We can carry reusable water bottles and limit packaging to glass, metal and paper, as these materials can be more easily recycled, reused or biodegraded. And, we can pay attention to ingredient lists, so we commit to buying products that are more naturally sourced and sustainable.

Businesses can lead the way and change consumer behaviour by producing more green products and helping to educate the masses. Nikken Consultants can spread the word about our company’s commitment to going green. The Nikken PiMag® Water Bottle and PiMag® Waterfall are eco-friendly and many of our nutritional products such as Jade GreenZymes® are certified organic. In addition, the TRUE elements® Marine Organic skincare products are certified by EcoCert.

Sustainable Ingredients… help support the planet’s natural wonders!

Seaweed banner

There are many little things we can do to live in harmony with our beautiful natural world. One of them is to look carefully at the ingredients we use in our daily routine and make sure they are being sourced in a sustainable way.

To be ‘sustainable’ means to show environmental responsibility and conservation of natural resources and biodiversity, when extracting and using ingredients from natural resources.

At Nikken we use sustainably sourced Seaweed and Palm Oil in the TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range .

Our Palm Oil suppliers are certified with the “Green Palm Sustainability”certificate, which means the palm oil plantation has been independently audited and certified against the RSPO – Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil standard.

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was established in 2004 to promote the production and use of sustainable palm oil for people, the planet and prosperity.
Forty per cent of the world’s palm oil producers are members of the RSPO, as well as many product manufacturers, retailers, environmental and social non-governmental organisations (NGOs). To become a certified member of the RSPO, producers must adhere to its principles. These are just a few; they must be compliant to applicable laws and regulations and importantly show environmental responsibility and conservation of natural resources and biodiversity.

Nikken’s TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range is also certified organic by ECOCERT2, the certification body for sustainable development.

The active seaweed, used in the TRUE elements® products, is harvested from a world UNESCO site just off the coast of France where the seaweed is grown sustainably and with respect to the environment around it. The French government and various other organizations manage the seaweed industry by committing each year on quantities to harvest, the geographical place to harvest, sizes to cut and number of licenses for harvesters.

Born from the Sea – discover the natural powers of Seaweed…

TE Blog

At the very heart of Nikken’s TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range is a synergistic blend of organic seaweeds and coastline plant, rich in natural trace elements and minerals.

Sustainably harvested; the seaweed used in Nikken’s TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range is sustainably harvested from a world UNESCO site just off the coast of Brittany, France. This means that the area where the seaweed is taken from is preserved and protected as part of the world’s cultural heritage and it is considered to be of outstanding value to humanity.

Before the seaweed is harvested it’s absorbed an abundance of trace elements and minerals from the sea – all highly nourishing for our skin. Due to the high-quality processing standards, we know exactly which species of seaweed are used, how the ingredients are harvested and how they are added to our products.

In line with Nikken’s natural, wholesome philosophy, we are proud to have the TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range certified organic by EcoCert1,with a minimum of 99% of the total ingredients from natural origin. EcoCert is a renowned international certificate that guarantees the highest organic integrity.  This is a distinction that very few products – even those labelled as “organic” – can claim.

Here are some of the seaweed species used in our TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range:

1. Chondrus crispus. Can help maintain the skin’s natural moisture level.
2. Crithmum maritimum. Can help reinforce the skins natural protection barrier, promote skin cell renewal and contribute to radiance and tone.
3. Ulva lactuca. Can help boost natural radiance.
4. Laminaria digitata. Rich in minerals and trace elements, this alga can help promote skins natural regeneration, improving hydration and promoting a natural glow.
5. Fucus vesiculosus. Can help stimulate and invigorate the skin.

Whilst our skins form is basically the same all over our body, its actually very different depending on where on the body it is. For example, the skin on your face is different from the skin on your palms. A good skincare regime will go a long way in helping your skin stay naturally soft and supple.

Summer Body Care…

Summer Body care blog banner

Your skin is your largest organ and has many important functions including protecting internal organs and systems, regulating body temperature and removing toxins.

Younger adults who experience minor injury will likely find that their skin recovers fairly quickly. However, with age, the skin becomes drier and more delicate. Thus, it is advisable to apply an appropriate moisturiser daily. During the warm summer months, be sure to use a cream-based moisturizer to help reduce water loss from the skin. TRUE elements® Moisturising Body Lotion 200 ml (#2046) is packed full of organic sea plant ingredients and shea butter to help maintain moisture and tone.

While the skin is made up of the same layers, it is very different depending on where on the body it is. For example, the skin on your face is different from the skin on your palms. A good skin care regime will go a long way in keeping your skin soft and supple. Look out for the return of Nikken’s TRUE elements® Hand and Foot Cream, in a bigger size – 75 ml.

Here are some tips for maintaining healthy looking skin:

1. Drink plenty of water. During the summer months, it is particularly important to hydrate your skin as sunshine, high temperatures and increased perspiration may all have a dehydrating effect.

2. Clean your skin from head to toe using a pH balanced shower gel to preserve the natural protective film (hydrolipidic film) that covers its entire surface. Its main function is to protect the skin against bacteria and at the same time it helps maintain its suppleness and retain moisture in the skin. Use the Nikken TRUE elements® Stimulating Shower Gel 200 ml (#2045), a pH balanced product that contains Brown Seaweeds and Marine Minerals to help maintain and preserve skins natural moisture.

3. Reduce stress and exercise more. Aerobic exercise can provide your body with a heavy dose of oxygenated blood. (This can help give your skin an instant glow for hours after a workout.) This is because the skin is filled with blood vessels that lie close to the surface. When you work out, the vessels dilate and give the skin a healthy, vibrant appearance.

4. Eat a healthy diet that includes many water-rich foods. What you eat reflects on your skin. Treat your skinkindly and optimise your nutritionby eating antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables, healthy fats from oily fish and nuts and a varied and balanced diet. This can help towards providing optimal levels of the nutrients that are crucial for radiant skin, including beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, zinc and selenium.

These are a few, of many ways, to help improve cellular hydration throughout your skin – and your entire body! Nikken’s TRUE elements® Marine Organic skincare range1, certified by Ecocert2, may help you achieve just that!

Happy skin is a reflection of a healthy mind and a healthy body so look after it… all of it! Your body will thank you.

Summer Hydration for Overall Health and Glowing Skin…

girl_with sport bottle bottle

Drinking plenty of water is extremely important, since between 50 % – 70 % of our body mass is composed of water, including skin, tissues, cells and organs1. When dehydration occurs, the body does not have enough water for its basic vital functions.

Symptoms of mild to moderate dehydrationmay include2:

  • Increased thirst with dry mouth
  • Unusual feelings of fatigue or sleepiness
  • Decrease or lack in urine output
  • Headache
  • Dry skin
  • Dizziness
  • Constipation

Symptoms of severe dehydration may include2:

  • Lightheadedness – that stops you from standing or walking normally
  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Fever
  • Poor skin elasticity
  • Lethargy and/or confusion
  • Actually passing out or blacking out
  • Swollen hands, feet and legs

Our bodies lose water daily through perspiration, breathing and the entire digestive process. We naturally replenish these losses through the consumption of food and beverages, but depending on individual diets, may not hydrate enough. The Institute of Medicine advises men to drink 3 litres of water per day and for women, 2.2 litres.

During the summer months, we tend to perspire more and lose even more water. That means the skin is working harder and we need to replenish the body’s largest organ by drinking more water. Water not only keeps our skin hydrated but can also help skin stay soft and supple. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to wrinkling.

Drinking enough water can help increase our metabolic rate, helping to improve the digestive system’s ability to flush toxins out of the body. Water will reach all the other organs before it reaches the skin so it’s important to hydrate the skin on the outside as well. That’s where a great facial moisturiser like TRUE elements®Nourishing Face Cream (# 2044) may help.  The Nourishing Face Cream contains hyaluronic acid, which can help to reinforce the skins natural process of storing moisture. Hyaluronic acid is believed to hold 1,000 times its own weight in water, thus attracting water to the skin and helping store it there.

So we can see that staying hydrated is good for our overall health! Make sure you stay hydrated, even when out and about, with the PiMag® Water Bottle (#1375).  The PiMag® Water Bottle is refillable and contains a filter that helps purify tap water. The PiMag® Water Bottle is reusable – so you are also doing your bit for the environment.  The bottle is BPA free and fully biodegradable, meaning it will break down into natural biomass that contributes to the soils nutrients.
