Introducing KENZEN TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare…

Good for You and Sustainable for Nature

Sometimes it’s possible to make a good thing better. That’s what we’ve done with the KENZEN TRUE elements® skin care product range. Not only have we upgraded the already advanced formulas, but we have also added a higher level of organic certification and changed our packaging to be more eco-friendly.

Why KENZEN… We’ve added ‘KENZEN’ to the brand – Kenzen means “healthy” in Japanese – we are tying together our nutritional products with our skin care ones. In fact, you’ll notice the new KENZEN TRUE elements® contains an even higher level of natural and organic ingredients – making it a great nutritional addition for your skin.

Organic Certification… TRUE elements® was always certified organic by EcoCert®, but now we’ve added COSMOS ORGANIC to our certifications. Adding this gold standard in international certification, COSMOS Organic means the KENZEN TRUE elements® range must comply with even more stringent guidelines. Complying with COSMOS Organic certification ensures responsible usage of natural resources and responsibility towards biodiversity and eco-friendly production with high-quality natural and organic ingredients via processes that respect people and the environment.

We take our commitment to the environment and to natural organic skin care seriously.

Our KENZEN TRUE elements® formulations are formulated along the same ingredient guidelines as our nutritionals. That means no GMOS, pesticides, parabens, polyethylene glycol (PEG), silicone, dyes, aroma, controversial ingredients, gluten, alcohol or aluminum salts.

Because we respect the ocean and its’ precious inhabitants, the seaweeds used in KENZEN TRUE elements® are harvested by hand and by boat from the Iroise Sea in Brittany – France, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Just as it’s important to fish sustainably, it’s equally crucial to harvest seaweed and other marine plants respectfully. Harvesting by hand and boat helps to preserve resources and maintain a low carbon footprint. Another step towards our mission to be ‘in harmony with nature’ and sharing Active Wellness with the Global Wellness Community.

The products… The first products relaunched are the Moisturizing Face Cream (# 2044) and the Youth Activ Serum (# 2042) with the addition of the brand NEW Revitalizing Face Serum (# 2062).

The two serums are formulated to complement the Moisturizing Face Cream. To be applied on a clean face before applying the Moisturizing Face Cream, the Youth Activ Serum targets anti-aging and dark pigmentation spots. The Revitalizing Serum is formulated to energize dull, tired-looking skin with marine minerals. Both serums help decrease the appearance of fine lines and boost the hydration of the Moisturizing Face Cream. Depending on the needs of your skin, you can choose which serum best suits you; however, you can also use one in the morning and the other at night.

Key Ingredients… The key ingredients in these advanced formulas include three different types of seaweed extracts: Organic Chondrus, Organic Laminaria, Organic Ulva Lactuca and sea plant: Organic Sea Fennel. Along with High Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid, Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid, Organic Shea Butter and Marine Magnesium Concentrate.

Nikken is committed to working in tandem with nature and Planet Earth, so the KENZEN TRUE elements® products are Good for You and Sustainable for Nature.

Healthy Feet and Active Wellness…

Do you ever think about how important your feet are for your health? Good foot health is essential for an active life especially now Spring is here bringing better weather and more outside activities.

Feet may seem quite small compared to the rest of our bodies, but they account for more than a quarter of all the bones in the entire body. With 26 bones and 33 joints, our feet provide us with a solid foundation of balance, posture and support. They also have connections to our limbs, our heart and other vital organs. Because of these connections, they are pretty accurate indicators of our overall health and wellbeing. So paying attention to your feet and making sure they’re always pain free and healthy, means you are also helping to ensure the rest of your body is as healthy as possible too.

The importance of feet also serves as the foundation for reflexology – which studies how one part of the body relates to another. Practitioners of reflexology rely on a “map” of the foot, where each part of our feet corresponds to another body part, notably the internal organs. Pressure applied to different parts of the foot is believed to stimulate or activate corresponding parts of the body.1

Stretching the feet, ankles and lower legs every day and before exercising helps keep the muscles strong and avoid injury. Two of the Nikken flagship products are the insoles. Nikken’s founder Isamu Masuda developed the magnetic insoles to simulate the therapeutic pebbles in the Japanese public hot baths. The Kenko mStrides® and Kenko mSteps® can both be cut to size to fit right into your shoes. The magnetic nodules massage the soles of the feet and act similarly to the acupressure practiced as part of reflexology. People who work while standing find Kenko insoles particularly helpful in keeping their feet energized and stable.

We know that keeping a healthy weight is beneficial for the whole body but in particular for our feet. Excess weight puts pressure on the feet, leading to foot pain, stress fractures and other health issues.

Clean, dry and moisturised feet… Healthy feet start with good hygiene. Thoroughly clean and scrub your feet with soap and water when you bathe. Afterward make sure you dry them well. Fungal organisms love moisture, so depriving them of any wetness will make it more difficult for them to thrive. Nikken’s TRUE elements® Hand & Foot Cream helps soothe dry hands and feet with Shea butter – known to nourish skin whilst the seaweed extract Chondrus, has moisturising properties.

Feet and ankle support… It’s important to make sure that shoes fit properly and are in good condition. Some of us have a favorite pair that are especially comfortable; however, if they are worn out inside or outside, they can cause foot strain. Along with the feet, the ankles need protecting too. The Nikken KenkoTherm® Ankle Wrap is great for use during exercise or just daily activities providing comfort and support. Another great support is the KenkoTherm Duk® Tape.  Flexible enough to be applied to most joint areas Duk Tape helps support joints and comfort stressed muscles with its Far Infrared and Negative Ion technologies.

This spring, let’s keep out feet healthy and moving towards Active Wellness…

What’s on your bathroom shelf?

When it comes to what products we keep in our bathrooms, a lot has changed. If someone asked “What organic products do you have in the house?”, you might have said “fruit and veg”. But over the years, organic products have made their way from the kitchen, into other rooms of the house such as the bathroom.

What does Organic mean?

Well, the products have been produced in a way that limits the use of synthetic materials or avoids them altogether. Organic products also promote balance in nature and conserve biodiversity. For example, restricted or no use at all of pesticides, antibiotics and growth hormones.

Why buy Organic?

The production process is less damaging to the environment and as a Global Wellness Community, we all like to do our bit and support it. Beside this, the products are more likely to contain better quality ingredients, which means they can work better too.

What to look for?

Look out for products that are Organic Certified.  This means that the item has been through a rigorous application process in which the efficacy of its organic status has been tested at all points in its manufacture, effectively from the soil up. ECOCERT1 for example, is a European organic certification organisation based in France which besides food products, also certifies cosmetics, detergents, perfumes and textiles. The company inspects about 70% of the organic food industry in France and about 30% worldwide. ECOCERT is also a leading certifier of fair-trade food, cosmetics and textiles as per ECOCERT Fair Trade standards.

Try organic in your bathroom…

You’ll make a great impact not only on the environment but also on your skin by switching to organic. When you choose Nikken’s TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range, you are choosing products with certified natural ingredients without the added chemicals or synthetic fragrances that may upset the skin’s delicate natural balance.

This product range represents a synergistic blend of organic seaweeds and coastline plants sustainably harvested from the Brittany coastline of France, making its ingredients formulas completely unique. And of course, it has been certified Organic by ECOCERT. The TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range is suitable for all skin types including sensitive due to its gentle marine organic ingredients.2

To celebrate International Women’s Day on the 8th of March 2021, we are offering savings of 50% on selected TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare*!

The Best Winter Skincare…

The colder, winter season is fast approaching; which is when our skin needs some extra tender loving care. As temperatures drop, so do the moisture levels in our skin, which can cause our skin to become dry and dehydrated, losing its natural, healthy-looking glow.

There are just so many factors that can contribute to changes in our skin during the winter. Our skin is also less exposed to sunlight, which means less opportunity for our body to make vitamin D.

So, we can see just how important it is to take extra care of our skin at this time. Here are our best winter skincare tips and routines to help you look after your precious skin:

– stay hydrated… when skin loses moisture and becomes dehydrated it means it’s lacking the water levels needed to function effectively. Make sure you keep hydrated from the inside, which means drinking plenty of water every day.

– exercise… it might be difficult to leave the warmth of the blanket behind and get your body moving on a cold morning. But if you love your skin, do it! Exercise will pump up your heart rate, which in turn, pumps more blood and oxygen to your skin, keeping it looking healthy and glowing naturally.

– adjust your skincare routine… skin tends to produce fewer oils in the winter months, so include a heavier face and body moisturiser or include a moisture boosting hydrating face serum. Use gentle, natural skincare formulas that work with your skin’s natural barriers.

– get back tobasics… keep skin in optimum condition by cleansing thoroughly twice a day; once in the morning and once in the evening to remove make-up and airborne dirt particles. TRUE elements® Velvet Cleansing Milk, is made from organic seaweeds that work in synergy with skins natural barriers. TRUE elements® Fresh Tonic Lotion clears away any last traces of cleanser, whilst Aloe Vera helps keep skin feeling fresh and moisturised.

– give your skin a moisture boost… serums are packed with powerful ingredients that penetrate deeper than a moisturising cream and deliver more targeted results due to their smaller molecule size – serums are the unsung heroes of the skincare world! Nikken’s TRUE elements® Youth Activ Serum contains Hyaluronic Acid; well-known to help increase skins moisture levels by attracting and retaining moisture. Apply before your moisturiser.

– don’t forget your hands and feet! Hands and feet get dry too so it’s important to cream them up in order to keep them baby softApply hand cream after washing your hands now more than ever. TRUE elements® Hand and Foot Cream contains seaweed extracts and Shea Butter to help keep skin well hydrated. Apply a layer of Hand and Foot Cream under socks before bed and wake up with super soft feet.

The TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range is formulated using organic seaweeds harvested off the French Brittany Coast and are certified organic by ECOCERT1. Find out more about the range here…

Vitamins and Minerals from the sea, to your skin…

v4 TE Blog Banner

Vitamins and minerals are considered essential nutrients. Working together, they perform hundreds of roles in the body. They help maintain bones, heal wounds and bolster the immune system. They also convert food into energy, and repair cellular damage. Eating a healthy diet is the best way to get the vitamins and minerals you need, however applying them topically can also give your skin a boost too.

The skincare industry is constantly evolving, but one thing remains the same: we continue to make use of ingredients around us, more often using plants that our ancestors have turned to for centuries including marine plants and seaweed.

Seaweed naturally absorbs its nourishment from the sea. Just like plants that grow on land, seaweed is chock-full of natural nutrients. Vitamin C, potassium, iron, vitamin B12 (niacin) and choline are only a few of the star players found in seaweed. It’s also known to aid in the natural cleansing and purifying of the skin, helping to improve suppleness and elasticity. With the abundance of vitamins and minerals, the benefits of using seaweed in skincare products are vast.

Nikken’s TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range includes seaweed, marine plants and seawater, making the products rich in natural minerals that are easily absorbed by the skin.
At the heart of the TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range is organic algae Chondrus Crispus, Crithmum Maritimum, Ulva Lactuca and Laminaria Digitata. All of which help maintain the skin’s natural moisture level promoting natural regeneration, improving hydration and promoting a healthy glow.

TE HeartCertified ORGANIC
Natural and genuine, respectful of the environment, providing all the richness of algae and sea water to your skin with an eco-responsible and sustainable approach. The TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range is certified organic by EcoCert.1

What’s the best way to enjoy the autumn months?

Pumpkins

Traditionally, autumn is the colorful harvest season that precedes the cold winter months. The temperature begins to drop and the air becomes dryer as winds blow and leaves fall.

Each change of season is a transitional period in nature and our bodies follow suit even if we are unconscious of what’s happening. Autumn is a time when leaves fall and vegetation is either harvested or dies off. During this natural cycle, mould is released. Even though mould is airborne year round, this extra release can be a stress on the immune system.

Depending on the individual’s state of Active Wellness, the immune system either continues working well or becomes overloaded during autumn. Digestion may not be as smooth and the foods that worked well during the summer may suddenly be overwhelming. Autumn is therefore an ideal time to reduce the toxic load on the immune and digestive systems. In fact, since 60 to 80% of the immune system revolves around the digestive system, the two impact each other a great deal.1

In addition to being the perfect time to incorporate KENZEN Lactoferrin® 2.0 into your daily regimen, here are some things to do that may help decrease toxic overload:

1. Minimise exposure to chemical toxins in the environment or in products you might use on a daily basis, including cosmetics, laundry detergent, cleaners, plastics, air fresheners, etc.

2. Try using unscented cleaners and detergents. Scented products often are full of artificial ingredients that tend to burden the immune and digestive systems.

3. Read labels and try eating food without artificial coloring and preservatives. Processed foods in general may irritate sensitive digestive tracts.

4. Pay attention to food sensitivities. This is a great time of the year to eat foods that warm you up, just as summer was a perfect time to eat cooling salads. A rule of thumb is to heed Nature and eat what grows seasonally such as pumpkins, squash, root vegetables (beets and turnips), dark leafy greens and anything is locally grown.

5. Store your reusable plastic bags and containers in closed cupboards and air-tight containers. Plastics contain petrochemical molecules that are airborne, especially indoors.

6. Drink filtered water. Chlorine is a harsh chemical placed in many municipal water systems. The PiMag Waterfall® exceeds the standard for chlorine reduction and helps households filter tap water and reduce or eliminate the use of bottled water, contributing to the environment. Add the KENZEN® Super Ciaga® to your PiMag® water. A delicious organic mix drink with 100% fruit and a high ORAC value (antioxidant), the Super Ciaga could help towards the maintenance of a strong immune system.

7. To help keep a healthy gut, traditional Chinese medicine recommends eating moistening foods such as tofu, tempeh, spinach, barley, pears, apples, seaweed, mushrooms, almonds and sesame seeds.2

8. Protect your skin from the dryness the elements might cause. Use a moisturiser such as TRUE elements® Marine Organic Youthful Face Cream at night and Nourishing Face Cream during the day.

Try to get plenty of rest and sleep to help keep your immune system happy and enjoy this beautiful season!

Inner Health and Outer Beauty in support of Psoriasis Awareness Month…

Blog banner

At Nikken, we like to promote Active Wellness as a way of living. It’s a proactive rather than a reactive approach to life. That means taking measures to maintain health both physically and mentally on an ongoing basis.

Ironically, as we make huge advances in technology, we continue to be confronted with challenges that often have no sure-fire solutions. This is the case with psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects more than 125 million people worldwide.1

No one knows the exact cause of psoriasis, but since August is Psoriasis Awareness Month, it is a good time to learn about it, whether we suffer from outbreaks or not. Researchers believe psoriasis can be triggered by cuts, scrapes or surgery, as well as emotional stress, infections and even certain medications, such as beta-blockers that control blood pressure and antimalarial drugs.2  This skin disorder causes skin cells to multiply 10 times faster than normal, building into bumpy red patches with white scales.3 It’s not contagious but sometimes occurs with members of the same family.

Although not curable, certain precautions can be taken to help prevent flare-ups:

• Stay warm in cold, dry weather. Researchers have shown that psoriasis occurs more often in wintry weather, so limiting the skin’s exposure to the cold is a proactive measure.

• Keep skin moisturized. Dry skin is a trigger and can make scaling more severe. A humidifier may be helpful, especially in winter months. Alternatively, use TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skin Care to cleanse, tone and hydrate skin year round.  All of the Organic TRUE elements® range contains specific formulations of enriching marine extracts and is suitable for sensitive skin.

• Get short, regular bursts of sunlight, because ultraviolet radiation has immunosuppressive effects. UV light therapy is a known treatment option for psoriasis.  Remember to always take care in the sunlight!

• Make sure to get enough Vitamin D, since a deficiency is common in people with psoriasis.

• Reduce stress. Reports suggest that stress may trigger flare-ups in 68% of adults with psoriaris.4 Practice yoga and meditation to ease stress.

• Eat a whole food diet that includes nuts and seeds, since they contain good fats, which may help improve skin health. Avoid food that is known to be inflammatory, especially processed carbohydrates and anything with lots of added sugar.

• Stay hydrated. Dehydration is found among people with psoriasis, especially females 60 years of age and older.5 Keep a PiMag Waterfall® in your kitchen for cooking purposes as well as drinking and take a PiMag® Water Bottle with you everywhere!

• Omega-3 fatty acids, commonly found in fish and flax seeds may help to reduce inflammation and assist skin health.  Kasai Omega Oils is rich in Omega 3 and Omega 6 as well as Borage Oil, known for treating hair and skin conditions.

All the precautions mentioned above may help those trying to prevent psoriasis flare-ups. They also are part of the Active Wellness approach to wellbeing for anyone seeking to maintain or improve health—physically and mentally.

Our Planet’s Most Important Living Plants are Tiny but Mighty…

Sea Blog banner

Marine scientists and ecologists consider living plants to be the most important living organisms on the planet. The almighty single cell alga produces about 50 % of the oxygen used on Earth and our lives essentially depend on it. Algae (plural for alga), paved the way for the evolution of other single-celled organisms as well as those with multiple and/or complex cells, known as eukaryotes.

Algae come in many forms and have an interesting array of uses. They are susceptible to environmental change which makes them excellent indicators of water quality. For example, an overgrowth of algae (known as algal blooms) can clog water intake pipes and filters. Once algal blooms die off, a substantial amount of dissolved oxygen is used by bacteria to break down the organic matter, depleting oxygen levels in their water habitat; this condition is known as hypoxia. In other words, aquatic ecosystems depend on algae to provide oxygen.

Aside from its formidable environmental impact, different types of algae – often known as seaweed – are sources of sustainable biofuel and found in common food items as well as cosmetics. Different forms of algae have varying commercial value – less known but economically important are algae used for fertilizer, feed for farm animals and fish. As soil-binding agents, algae are important in the healthy formation of soil to protect against natural processes such as erosion.2

Algae are an important source of nourishment in numerous cultures around the world. Most of us are aware of nori, Japanese seaweed used to prepare sushi. Chinese incorporate kelp into cold dishes that are served as appetizers or sides and into hot soups.

Not only is algae considered by many consumers worldwide to be a low cost source of protein, but it also provides a number of important minerals such as iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium, manganese, and zinc. Algae also contain several healthy elements including carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and vitamins A, B, C, and E3; a perfect food to incorporate into an Active Wellness lifestyle.

The chlorophyll, produced in the algae, contributes to the oxygen supply of the skin as it is similar in composition to hemoglobin. Especially effective in skin care products, green algae have an amino acid content similar to human collagen. The TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare line is formulated with various combinations of seaweed extracts, namely Chondrus Crispus (red algae or Irish moss), Laminaria Digitata (brown algae, Oarweed, Irish seaweed or kelp), Ulva Lactuca (sea lettuce) and Crithmum maritimum L. (sea fennel). Containing minerals, trace elements and marine micronutrients, these seaweed extracts in the TRUE elements® Ecocert certified skincare line help to gently cleanse, tone, hydrate and prevent signs of premature aging.

Let’s Go Green…

Going Green Blog banner

As we become more educated about how to help sustain planet Earth, our habits and even the language we use, evolve. Going “green” is being redefined as we learn about alternatives and possibilities.

The terms “green” or “sustainable” often refer to products, services or practices that allow for economic development while conserving for future generations.  A product is considered green if it has “less of an environmental impact or is less detrimental to human health than the traditional product equivalent.” 1

No product is 100% green, since everything we dispose of will eventually impact the environment in some way. According to Sustainable Earth, green products are:

  • Energy efficient, durable and often have low maintenance requirements.
  • Free of Ozone depleting chemicals, toxic compounds and don’t produce toxic by-products.
  • Often made of recycled materials or content or from renewable and sustainable sources.
  • Obtained from local manufacturers or resources.
  • Biodegradable or easily reused either in part or as a whole.

We can each contribute to sustainability in small ways. Most of us know about the 3Rs: REDUCE, RECYCLE, REUSE. Practicing the 3Rs means we are going green by decreasing wastefulness, minimizing the accumulation of consumables and sharing with our communities.

Other ways of going green include using energy saving light bulbs, improving house insulation, installing solar panels, driving hybrid cars, eating less red meat, composting and using less plastic. We can carry reusable water bottles and limit packaging to glass, metal and paper, as these materials can be more easily recycled, reused or biodegraded. And, we can pay attention to ingredient lists, so we commit to buying products that are more naturally sourced and sustainable.

Businesses can lead the way and change consumer behaviour by producing more green products and helping to educate the masses. Nikken Consultants can spread the word about our company’s commitment to going green. The Nikken PiMag® Water Bottle and PiMag® Waterfall are eco-friendly and many of our nutritional products such as Jade GreenZymes® are certified organic. In addition, the TRUE elements® Marine Organic skincare products are certified by EcoCert.

Sustainable Ingredients… help support the planet’s natural wonders!

Seaweed banner

There are many little things we can do to live in harmony with our beautiful natural world. One of them is to look carefully at the ingredients we use in our daily routine and make sure they are being sourced in a sustainable way.

To be ‘sustainable’ means to show environmental responsibility and conservation of natural resources and biodiversity, when extracting and using ingredients from natural resources.

At Nikken we use sustainably sourced Seaweed and Palm Oil in the TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range .

Our Palm Oil suppliers are certified with the “Green Palm Sustainability”certificate, which means the palm oil plantation has been independently audited and certified against the RSPO – Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil standard.

The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was established in 2004 to promote the production and use of sustainable palm oil for people, the planet and prosperity.
Forty per cent of the world’s palm oil producers are members of the RSPO, as well as many product manufacturers, retailers, environmental and social non-governmental organisations (NGOs). To become a certified member of the RSPO, producers must adhere to its principles. These are just a few; they must be compliant to applicable laws and regulations and importantly show environmental responsibility and conservation of natural resources and biodiversity.

Nikken’s TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range is also certified organic by ECOCERT2, the certification body for sustainable development.

The active seaweed, used in the TRUE elements® products, is harvested from a world UNESCO site just off the coast of France where the seaweed is grown sustainably and with respect to the environment around it. The French government and various other organizations manage the seaweed industry by committing each year on quantities to harvest, the geographical place to harvest, sizes to cut and number of licenses for harvesters.
