All the purity of nature at your fingertips…

Spring Hydration Blog Banner

It’s simple: Water is the necessity of Life. Keeping hydrated is crucial for health and wellbeing. Many people do not consume enough fluids each day. Around 60% of the body is made up of water, and around 71% of the planet’s surface is covered by water. To function properly, all the cells and organs of the body need water.

Here are some of the benefits of good hydration for the body:

1. Increases Energy & Relieves Fatigue. Since the brain is mostly made out of water, drinking it helps you to focus, concentrate better and be more alert. As an added bonus, your energy levels are also boosted!

2. Improves Skin Complexion. Good hydration moisturizes the skin, keeps it fresh, soft, glowing and smooth.

3. Helps Maintain the Balance of Body Fluids. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature.

4. Water energises your muscles. Having the right balance of water and electrolytes in your muscles helps them to perform at their best. That’s why it’s important to drink lots of water before doing exercise and to keep your fluid intake high during and after your workout.

5. Water gives your kidneys a helping hand. Your kidneys purify your blood and remove waste products from your body by passing them into your urine. As long as you are fully hydrated, your kidneys are highly effective at removing toxins such as nitrogen from your body.

But, how much water should you drink daily? The National Academies of Sciences recommends for women a total of 2.7 litres of liquid daily, including all beverages and water-rich foods.1   For men, the recommendation is a total of 3.7 litres of liquid daily, including all beverages and water-rich foods.2

Drinking PiMag® filtered water is a critical aspect of an Active Wellness Lifestyle.

Probiotics for a Healthy Gut…

Probiotic Blog logo

Probiotics are in the news now more than ever. From the Greek pro, meaning promoting, and biotics, meaning life, these life-promoting compounds are gaining in usage for a good reason.

Our bodies naturally have good or helpful bacteria as well as bad or harmful bacteria. Maintaining the correct balance between these is necessary for optimal health. This is where probiotics come in. The wrong bacteria in the wrong place can cause issues but the right bacteria in the right place can have benefits. Probiotics are ‘good’ bacteria found in food products or supplements that can beneficially affect our health by improving the balance and function of the gut bacteria.1

Age, genetics and diet may influence the composition of the bacteria in the body. When the bacteria in our bodies are not in balance, we are in “dysbiosis” and may experience certain illnesses linked to the digestive system. Probiotics help shift the balance in favor of good bacteria for healthy digestion. When the digestive tract is healthy, it filters out and eliminates things that can damage it, such as harmful bacteria, toxins, chemicals and other waste products.

The other way that probiotics help overall health is how they affect the immune system. Since the immune system protects against germs, dysfunction can cause allergic reactions and autoimmune disorders. Just like the digestive system, the immune system functions optimally when in balance, and probiotics have been shown to be of benefit.

A happy gut is responsible for overall health in a big way.Fermented foods have been shown to be probiotic-rich and may help balance the microbiome and support the immune system. Taking probiotics through natural foods and beverages such as yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi and kombucha can easily be part of an Active Wellness diet. Nutritional supplements such as KENZEN Lactoferrin 2.0® and KVB® Natural Food Mix – Chocolate contain prebiotics and/or probiotics. Not only they can help boost the immune and digestive systems but they also promote healthy minds! 3

Incorporating them into a daily regimen is a big part of an Active Wellness lifestyle.

Vitamins and Minerals from the sea, to your skin…

v4 TE Blog Banner

Vitamins and minerals are considered essential nutrients. Working together, they perform hundreds of roles in the body. They help maintain bones, heal wounds and bolster the immune system. They also convert food into energy, and repair cellular damage. Eating a healthy diet is the best way to get the vitamins and minerals you need, however applying them topically can also give your skin a boost too.

The skincare industry is constantly evolving, but one thing remains the same: we continue to make use of ingredients around us, more often using plants that our ancestors have turned to for centuries including marine plants and seaweed.

Seaweed naturally absorbs its nourishment from the sea. Just like plants that grow on land, seaweed is chock-full of natural nutrients. Vitamin C, potassium, iron, vitamin B12 (niacin) and choline are only a few of the star players found in seaweed. It’s also known to aid in the natural cleansing and purifying of the skin, helping to improve suppleness and elasticity. With the abundance of vitamins and minerals, the benefits of using seaweed in skincare products are vast.

Nikken’s TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range includes seaweed, marine plants and seawater, making the products rich in natural minerals that are easily absorbed by the skin.
At the heart of the TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare range is organic algae Chondrus Crispus, Crithmum Maritimum, Ulva Lactuca and Laminaria Digitata. All of which help maintain the skin’s natural moisture level promoting natural regeneration, improving hydration and promoting a healthy glow.

Declutter for Wellbeing…

Declutter Blog Banner

The benefits of decluttering go beyond just the tangible benefits of a clutter-free, tidy home. Decluttering can become an important way to practice self-care because it helps you take control of your home, your belongings and your life to improve your overall wellbeing.

Here are a few examples of the ways decluttering is important for self-care by helping to improve your overall wellbeing and quality of life:

More space
The more surfaces you can create, the more space you have, the easier it is to relax into that space. Tackle one room at a time and see how much more calming it is to use when all the clutter is gone. Relaxation is great for our health and wellbeing and helps reduce stress levels. Less clutter means less stress too.

The more clutter you have, the more mental power it takes to think about it. Few people walk into a cluttered space and feel relaxed and at ease there. Quite the opposite.
So, by decluttering a space, however big or small, you’ll waste less mental power thinking about it.

More time
You’ll spend less time cleaning, tidying and taking care of things you own, simply because there’s less of it.

More ‘me’ time
Declutter your mind and body with ‘me’ time. Use this time to simply reconnect with Mother Nature. The Earth is a source of natural healing energy and has its own energy in the form of a mild ‘negative’ charge. Tap into the streams of electrons from the Earth with Nikken’s KenkoGround® (88011). A conductive mat that works by connecting you to the Earth’s natural charge – helping restore a healthful natural balance.

More energy
Are there things you want to do and achieve, yet you never seem to have the energy?
Less stuff means less time and less energy required to manage it, freeing up more energy and attention to devote to what matters most to you.

More focus
Freeing space in your immediate surroundings frees space in your mind too1. As the space opens, so will your mind and you’ll find you have far more time and energy to focus on what you want to do.

Maybe you are surprised at how closely clutter is associated with your state of mind.  There are other ways you can look after the wellness of your mind on a daily basis too including through diet

Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara, the discoverer of barley grass, talks about the benefits of Green Barley and how this rich nutrient could help ‘remove mental stress’ – in his best-selling book Green Barley Essence.2

Barbara Simonsohn writes – ‘Good for the Brain and the Mood! Barley grass contains substantial amounts of important amino acids. One hundred grams of barley grass juice powder contains approximately 240 mg of glutamic acid, an amino acid important for neural transmission and 110 mg of phenylamine. With the latter amino acid promoting vitality and mental agility.’ 3

Nikken’s Jade GreenZymes® (20311) is an organic Barley Grass Juice Powder – certified Organic by The Soil Association. Rich in the multiple benefits of nutritional ingredients including vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, amino acids, enzymes, plant protein, fibre and many more.  Just add water for an instant refreshing beverage.

Discover the “Plantivore” lifestyle…

Blog Banner Plantivore

2020 is the year we’ll be welcoming Plantivores to the healthy eating scene. The new Plantivore lifestyle will embrace a well-balanced plant based diet.

Plants contain very powerful anti-oxidants and utilizing fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes in their unprocessed and unrefined form leaves their nutrient and healing benefit at its optimum.

In the human body, oxygen generates reactive molecules throughout all the tissues called ‘free radicals’. These free radicals can be harmful to body cells as they can damage essential molecules such as DNA and the enzymes necessary for optimum cell function. Anti-oxidants capture these reactive free radicals and safely convert them back to normal. Although the body produces anti-oxidant molecules on its own, additional plant based anti-oxidants can also be delivered through diet, mainly from fruit and vegetables.

A plant-based diet is not strict like veganism or vegetarianism. Instead it gives you the flexibility to eat mainly plant-based wholesome foods the majority of the time. You can still eat meat every once in a while if you want to. Having a balanced lifestyle is often more sustainable and easier to follow, especially for those who are new to eating wholesome plant-based foods.

Here are a few benefits of a plant-based lifestyle:

1. Care for the environment. A diet based on whole grains, fruits and vegetables reduces water and land use, lowers pollution, slows deforestation and reduces destruction of topsoil, among other benefits.1

2. Save money. Switching to a plant-based diet could save you quite a bit of money each week. Furthermore, you can even grow some of your own fruits and veggies at home, which is even more cost effective.

3. Decrease in Body Fat. The foods that you eat when following a plant-based diet are generally much more nutrient dense. Compared to processed foods, they are also relatively low in calories. Therefore, it could be pretty easy to shed excess body fat while on a plant-based diet.

Plant-based diets, including vegan diets, can be healthy as long as they are balanced and nutritionally adequate. When followed consistently, a well-balanced, plant-based diet that focuses on wholegrains, fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds may provide health benefits.2

As you start to embrace the new Plantivore lifestyle, KVB® Natural Food Meal Replacement Mix can help you with the transition to being more plant-based in your diet. It contains organic Moringa as well as organic pea protein, organic vegetables and prebiotics and probiotics.

BOOST your Winter Health and strengthen your IMMUNITY with KENZEN Lactoferrin 2.0®

Winter Immunity banner

Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein (sugar-protein) naturally present in milk: Lacto = milk, ferrin = iron. It belongs to the transferrin family that transports iron ions and it is a natural constituent of body fluids such as saliva, breast milk and tears.

Lactoferrin binds the iron already present in the body, helping the body utilize and absorb it more efficiently. This removes the need to add additional non-native sources of iron, allowing the body to receive the right balance of iron without the stomach and intestinal discomfort.1

However, this is not lactoferrin’s only role within the body. Its iron-binding properties give it several secondary functions:

  • Boost your immune system. Lactoferrin is also essential in providing an increased defence for your immune system. Lactoferrin deprives unwanted bacteria in the body from the nutrients they need to continue spreading and is able to boost your body with beneficial antioxidants, enhance oxygenation of the tissues and improve white blood cell health.
  • Clear skin. If you are having trouble maintaining healthy or clear skin, lactoferrin also works at reducing acne activity and preventing breakouts.
  • Maintain a healthy gut. Gut health refers to the balance of microorganisms that live in the digestive tract. Looking after the health of the gut and maintaining the right balance of these microorganisms is vital for physical and mental health, immunity, and more. These bacteria, yeasts, and viruses are also called the “gut microbiome” or “gut flora”. Many microbes are beneficial for human health, and some are even essential.

To maintain a healthy gut, increase your fibre intake. Good examples of high fibre vegetables are artichokes, leeks, onions and garlic, which all contain high levels of inulin (a prebiotic fibre). Some vegetables like lettuce have little fibre or nutrient value. Choose food and drinks with high levels of polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidants that act as fuel for microbes. Examples are nuts, seeds, berries, olive oil, brassicas, coffee and tea – especially green tea.

You can also consume plenty of fermented foods containing live microbes. Good choices are unsweetened yoghurt; kefir, which is a sour milk drink with five times as many microbes as yoghurt; raw milk cheeses; sauerkraut; kimchi, a Korean dish made from garlic, cabbage and chilli; and soybean-based products such as soy sauce, tempeh and natto.

Nutritional supplementation is also helpful. Lactoferrin may help the body absorb what is already there and importantly, does so without upsetting the stomach.  It has been shown in clinical research to be more bioavailable, allowing for more efficient absorption of iron, compared to other iron sources.2

Simple tips for a Healthy Winter with Winter Wellness

Winter Blog Banner

It may be cold outside, but winter needn’t be the unhealthiest time of year for you and your family. Along with chilly temperatures winter brings a variety of bugs, often leaving you feeling run down. Although there are no quick fixes to prevent colds and flu from striking, here are some simple steps you can take to ensure your immune system is functioning at peak performance.

1. Wash your hands and do it right. Everyday you come into contact with thousands of germs and bacteria. Wash your hands several times a day with plenty of soap and warm water for 15-20 seconds.

2. Keep hydrated. Your fluid intake can help to ease the symptoms of colds and flu – it prevents the throat and nose lining from drying out. Warm fluids are especially helpful as they can help moisten your throat. According to new guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and Public Health England (PHE), honey drinks (and add a dose of lemon for added vitamin C!) have been shown to ease coughing.Try to drink at least 8 glasses of fluid each day.

3. Get enough sleep. The National Sleep Foundationrecommends seven to eight hours of sleep a night to keep your immune system in fighting shape. When you are running on empty and in a sleep deficit, your immune system can suffer, leaving you more susceptible to picking up winter bugs.

4. Light. Open the blinds and windows as often as you can. Get outside and soak up some natural light – the health benefits are endless and include topping up essential vitamin D, helping you get a good night’s sleep and even improving your mental health. Take the dog and the kids with you or enjoy a peaceful walk by yourself. Even a few minutes out on your lunch break can make all the difference.

5. Eat fruit and vegetables from a rainbow of different colours. Did you know each different colour provides you with a different array of nutrients? Make sure you include plenty of green, red, purple/blue, yellow/orange and white/brown fruits and vegetables in your diet every day. Some examples of the immunity boosting nutrients found in fruit and vegetables include: Vitamin A (or carotenoids – any vegetable of orange or yellow colours and some green foods like dark green veg), Vitamin C (citrus fruits, kiwi, tomatoes, potatoes, berries and broccoli) and Phytonutrients (compounds found naturally in plants). Phenolics (found in most fruit and vegetables) and flavonoids (berries, onions, Brussels sprouts, citrus, kale and parsley) are common phytonutrients, which are known to have immune benefits.

Barley Grass is naturally high in many key nutrients that help to support the immune system, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and enzymes.

Nikken’s Organic Jade GreenZymes® is the perfect winter drink (it can be consumed hot or cold) and could offer you that bit of extra help in boosting your immunity in the cold season.

Share the Love = Share Active Wellness

Share the Love Blog Banner

We are just a month away from Valentine’s Day… February has long been celebrated as a month of romance and Saint Valentine’s Day, as we know it, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. It occurs every year on the 14th February.

What is the meaning of it and why do we celebrate it?

This day was named after Saint Valentine. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still being used today.

Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, although written declarations didn’t appear until after 1400. The oldest known valentine that still exists today was a poem by the Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. It’s now part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England.1

Loving means sharing. Valentine’s Day is a day for sharing our care with our loved ones. In many places around the world, sweets, chocolate, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of Saint Valentine. Today, many of those same traditions are visible as lovers send bouquets of flowers and chocolates to one another on Valentine’s Day. We might think that Valentine’s Day as a holiday for couples; however, it’s also a day to celebrate the many loves and friendships in our lives.

The heart shape, by a modern definition, is an ideograph used to express the idea of the “heart” in its metaphorical or symbolic sense as the core of emotion, affection, and love.

Look no further for the perfect Valentine gift that comes from your heart. Nikken has created the unique Kenko Heart Pendant and Valentine’s Day is the ideal time to declare your love! The pendant is stainless steel on one side and gold-plated on the other and is engineered with an 800-gauss neodymium magnet, symbolising the heart of Nikken.

Enjoy Valentine’s Day and lavish as much love and affection upon your loved ones as you can. But remember it just as important to do the same everyday.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle…

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Blog gc

The most effective way to reduce waste is to not create it in the first place. Making a new product requires a lot of materials and energy – raw materials must be extracted from the earth and the product must be fabricated then transported to wherever it will be sold. As a result, reduction and reuse are the most effective ways you can save natural resources, protect the environment and save money.

Some of the benefits of Reducing and Reusing

  • Prevents pollution caused by reducing the need to harvest new raw materials
  • Saves energy
  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change
  • Helps sustain the environment for future generations
  • Reduces the amount of waste that will need to be recycled or sent to landfills and incinerators

How to Reduce and Reuse

  • Buy used. In most cases, used items can be less expensive and just as good as new.
  • Less packaging. When manufacturers make their products with less packaging, they use fewer raw materials. This reduces waste and costs. Buying in bulk can reduce packaging and save you money.
  • Buy reusable instead of disposable. Look for items that can be reused. For example, you can bring your own cutlery and coffee mug to work, rather than using disposable items.
  • Borrow, rent or share items that are used infrequently, like party decorations, tools or furniture.

Recycling…

Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. Recycling has multiple benefits for many areas of the economy – providing raw materials, creating jobs and encouraging business opportunities and innovation.1

There are many benefits to recycle and all of us can contribute to this just by taking small steps:

  • Find ways of recycling different materials. Many materials can be recycled, such as paper, plastic, metal and glass. Other items such as furniture, electronic equipment, building material and vehicles can also be recycled but many people don’t often think to do so.
  • Buy products that can be recycled. When shopping at the supermarket, look for products that can be recycled easily such as glass jars and tin cans. Avoid plastic!
  • Buy products that have been made from recycled material. You can tell if a product is eco-friendly by looking at the label on the packaging.
  • Make sure you have a recycle bin in your home. Your local council should be able to provide you with a recycle bin that can be used for materials such as glass, paper, aluminium and plastic.
  • Composting – a process where waste degrades into compost, which can then be used in your garden to help it grow. It is an excellent way to recycle garden and kitchen waste such as plant trimmings and leftover food.

Nikken’s bio-green PiMag® Water Bottle is made from patented BioGreen materials. These materials enable the bottle to completely break down in landfills and compost piles into biomass that nourishes soil and biogas that can be harvested for energy use.

Fuel for Active Wellness = Fuel for Life

Grass Facebook Banner.jpg

Plants are the main source of oxygen for all forms of life on planet Earth. They also represent the primary source of all that is of nutritional value. Due to modern living conditions such as stress, smog and noise pollution, we now need more vital substances then we did a decade ago. Barley grass extract can provide vital substances that are no longer adequately present in our food.

Doctor Yoshihide Hagiwara, discoverer of the nutritional benefits of barley grass, called barley grass powder “nature’s best fast food”. He was a world-renowned scientist who has developed over 200 successful formulas. After researching over 150 types of grasses, plants, flowers, vegetables and herbs, he discovered that young barley grass is “one of the most nutritionally balanced foods in nature”.

During his research, he has also realised that the body more easily absorbs nutrients and enzymes from a juice powder, than from a whole leaf product. In order to capture and protect the delicate nutrients and enzymes, Dr. Hagiwara developed a unique extraction and spray dry process which earned him Japan’s prestigious Science and Technology Award. The same process is used in our Organic Jade GreenZymes® barley grass powder supplement.

We use a special seed that produces a large, broad thick grass, which is ideal for juicing. This is grown in rich fertile topsoil and only in the colder seasons to allow the barley to grow slowly in order to absorb all the nutrients in the soil. The barley grass is then harvested at 12-18 inches high, when the nutrients are at their peak and the blades are thick and loaded with juice.

Immediately after harvest, the barley grass is taken to the factory where the process of turning it into powder begins. The leaves are repeatedly washed and rinsed with fresh, pure water. Then, they are chopped to 1-2 inches and put through several stages of crushing where the fibre is separated from the juice.

After the juice is extracted, it’s sent to a vacuum evaporating system where it becomes concentrated. When the concentration process is over, the juice is spray dried using Dr. Hagiwara’s award-winning method at low temperatures. This method allows the enzymes and the nutrients to remain active and bioavailable. The spray-dried powder is granulated and transformed into uniformly sized granules that are easily dissolvable into liquid.

Throughout every step of the manufacturing process, rigorous quality control testing is performed, from checking the soil to testing the finished product.

Nikken’s Jade GreenZymes® formula is kosher and vegan, providing a fresh, clean taste and is Organic certified by the Soil Association.

Barley grass is so nutrient-dense that it can supply complete nutritional support.

Barley juice powder supports good health by providing:

  • Chlorophyll
  • Antioxidant enzymes: particularly, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and nitrogen reductase
  • Antioxidant bioflavonoids: a number of C-glycosylflavones, including saponarin and lutonarin
  • Eight essential amino acids, making it an extremely rich source of protein, with 15 times more protein than milk
  • Minerals: calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and copper
  • Vitamins: beta-Carotene, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, pantothenic acid, lutein and folic acid

With so many nutrients, barley juice powder offers extensive health benefits.
