What’s the best way to enjoy the autumn months?

Pumpkins

Traditionally, autumn is the colorful harvest season that precedes the cold winter months. The temperature begins to drop and the air becomes dryer as winds blow and leaves fall.

Each change of season is a transitional period in nature and our bodies follow suit even if we are unconscious of what’s happening. Autumn is a time when leaves fall and vegetation is either harvested or dies off. During this natural cycle, mould is released. Even though mould is airborne year round, this extra release can be a stress on the immune system.

Depending on the individual’s state of Active Wellness, the immune system either continues working well or becomes overloaded during autumn. Digestion may not be as smooth and the foods that worked well during the summer may suddenly be overwhelming. Autumn is therefore an ideal time to reduce the toxic load on the immune and digestive systems. In fact, since 60 to 80% of the immune system revolves around the digestive system, the two impact each other a great deal.1

In addition to being the perfect time to incorporate KENZEN Lactoferrin® 2.0 into your daily regimen, here are some things to do that may help decrease toxic overload:

1. Minimise exposure to chemical toxins in the environment or in products you might use on a daily basis, including cosmetics, laundry detergent, cleaners, plastics, air fresheners, etc.

2. Try using unscented cleaners and detergents. Scented products often are full of artificial ingredients that tend to burden the immune and digestive systems.

3. Read labels and try eating food without artificial coloring and preservatives. Processed foods in general may irritate sensitive digestive tracts.

4. Pay attention to food sensitivities. This is a great time of the year to eat foods that warm you up, just as summer was a perfect time to eat cooling salads. A rule of thumb is to heed Nature and eat what grows seasonally such as pumpkins, squash, root vegetables (beets and turnips), dark leafy greens and anything is locally grown.

5. Store your reusable plastic bags and containers in closed cupboards and air-tight containers. Plastics contain petrochemical molecules that are airborne, especially indoors.

6. Drink filtered water. Chlorine is a harsh chemical placed in many municipal water systems. The PiMag Waterfall® exceeds the standard for chlorine reduction and helps households filter tap water and reduce or eliminate the use of bottled water, contributing to the environment. Add the KENZEN® Super Ciaga® to your PiMag® water. A delicious organic mix drink with 100% fruit and a high ORAC value (antioxidant), the Super Ciaga could help towards the maintenance of a strong immune system.

7. To help keep a healthy gut, traditional Chinese medicine recommends eating moistening foods such as tofu, tempeh, spinach, barley, pears, apples, seaweed, mushrooms, almonds and sesame seeds.2

8. Protect your skin from the dryness the elements might cause. Use a moisturiser such as TRUE elements® Marine Organic Youthful Face Cream at night and Nourishing Face Cream during the day.

Try to get plenty of rest and sleep to help keep your immune system happy and enjoy this beautiful season!

This September, go Organic…

OrgSept2019_Megaphone_emailbanner_orange

It’s Organic September month. But what does this mean? “Organic September” is a campaign run by the Soil Association, designed to promote and educate people about organic food and farming practices.

Using more organic farmed produce can have many advantages such as benefiting nature, wildlife and building healthy soils. According to the Soil Association, approximately 95 % of food production relies on soil.1

 Organic always means:

  • No artificial colours and preservatives
  • Fewer pesticides
  • Always free range
  • No GM ingredients
  • No routine use of antibiotics

There are many ways in which you can get involved in the organic movement.
Here are just a few:

1. Reduce waste. The first step to sustainable living is going zero waste and what better way to start then at home. Learn the rules of recycling in your area and stop using plastic bags. Get used to reusable containers and you can even have a compost bin in the garden for the leftover food.

2. Shop local. Shopping at an independent store or farm shop is one of the easiest ways to support your local economy. These places have many less known organic brands that aren’t as easy to find in the supermarkets. More demand for organic food means more organic farms, and more organic farms means more wildlife and healthier soils.

3. Eating out? Ask where your food comes from. It could be ordered in bulk from a major supplier, or just simply supplied by the local farm. It’s always good to know.

4. Grow your own. Growing your own fruit and vegetables is not only fun, but also very satisfying knowing you have grown them yourself and that they are 100% organic. It is also about passing on the knowledge to future generations of gardeners and food lovers and learning more about where our food comes from. Even if you missed out on this summer’s harvest, it’s not too late to start planting your own seeds. For example, spring cabbages and spinach seeds can be planted now and picked next spring, whilst broad beans, onions and pea seeds are hardy during the upcoming winter season and should crop in early spring.

Whatever products you’re buying, when you choose organic food, drink or beauty and textiles, you choose products that promote a better world. Organic food comes from trusted sources. All organic farms and food companies are inspected at least once a year with the standards for organic food being laid down in European law.

Both KENZEN® Super Ciaga® (#17001) and Jade GreenZymes® (#20310 – Sachets / #20311 – Jar) from Nikken are certified Organic by the Soil Association, something we are very proud of.

Campaigning for more organic food and farming and getting involved, means that together, we can slow down climate change, setting an example for future generations.

Start Active Wellness Early in Life for a Healthy Heart…

Heart health banner

It’s never too early to focus on your heart health and it’s a lot easier to be active and stay active if you start at a young age.

Children who are overweight or have a family history of heart disease or of high cholesterol, high blood pressure and type 1 or type 2 diabetes run the highest risk of having heart issues. However, anyone can develop heart disease, so as parents, it’s our responsibility to role model an Active Wellness lifestyle. Telling a child or teenager to eat vegetables and exercise regularly is ineffective if we personally don’t follow through with those behaviors.

By starting heart-healthy habits from childhood, kids can reduce the chance they will ever need to worry about cardiovascular disease.

Here are a few tips for helping children develop heart-healthy habits:

1. Personally exercise more and find ways to be active as a family. Only one out of five adults meets the physical activity guidelines of getting 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity.2

2. Physical activity should be fun for children and adolescents. Encourage kids to try new activities in order to discover the ones they like and will pursue into adulthood.

3. Reduce time in front of the TV. Look into video games that incorporate movement, such as dance, indoor cycling or virtual sports (golf, tennis, etc.).

4. Give your kids active toys and games. Try bikes, skateboards, roller skates, scooters, jump ropes, balls and trampolines.

5. Take advantage of community facilities near you: pools, recreation centers, bike paths and parks.

6. Prepare simple meals together. Even children can help wash, chop and peel vegetables to assemble a salad. And because they helped make it, they’re more likely to eat it.

7. Experiment with spices to help cut down on salt. High sodium diets are often the cause of high blood pressure. Since we are creatures of habit, children who eat natural foods cooked with very little salt have fewer salt cravings as they grow up. Don’t assume children won’t eat beneficial flavor enhancers such as garlic, onions, mustard and vinegar.

8. Serve fruit for dessert. There’s plenty of natural sugar in fruit. Many Asian and Mediterranean diets rely on fruit for dessert. Children who grow up without eating sugary desserts tend to have this good habit carry over into adulthood.

9. Do not serve sodas. Kenzen Super Ciaga® is a superior soda replacement when added to PiMag® water. The Nikken PiMag® Water Bottle is great for providing clean and alkaline water wherever you go.

Even if you didn’t inherit heart-healthy habits, start now. Nikken has nutritional supplements that may help you with Active Wellness for the rest of your life.

Superfruit with Super Powers…

Blueberries banner

Berries truly are Mother Nature’s gifts to mankind… and blueberries have some extraordinary powers.  Here are a few reasons why blueberries should be a part of your Active Wellness regimen:

1. They’re low in calories but high in nutrient value. One cup of blueberries contains about 80+ calories and 4 grams of fibre, 24% of the RDI for Vitamin C, 36% of the RDI for Vitamin K and 24% of the RDI for manganese.

2. Known as “king of antioxidant foods,” the blueberry contains large amounts of flavonoids. Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants proven to have anti-inflammatory and immune system benefits.1

3. Oxidative DNA damage is unavoidable and believed to occur tens of thousands of times per day in every cell of the body. It is part of the reason we age. As blueberries are high in antioxidants, they can help neutralize some of the free radicals that damage our DNA. In one study, 168 people drank 1 litre of mixed blueberry and apple juice daily. After four weeks, oxidative DNA damage due to free radicals was reduced by 20 %.2

4. Blueberries are considered to be a heart-healthy food because antioxidants are strongly linked to reduced levels of oxidized LDL3,the bad cholesterol that helps cause heart disease. One study determined that eating 75 grams of blueberries with a main meal significantly reduced the oxidation of bad LDL cholesterol.4

5. Eating blueberries regularly may help maintain brain function and improve memory. Antioxidants in blueberries appear to benefit aging neurons, leading to improvements in cell signaling. In one study, 9 adults with mild cognitive impairment consumed blueberry juice daily. After 12 weeks, they experienced improvements in several markers of brain function.5

6. Research suggests that the compounds that give the fruit its blue color may have beneficial effects on insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. Blueberries provide moderate amounts of sugar compared to other fruits, with about 15 grams of sugar per cup, equivalent to a small apple or large orange. 6

7. Blueberries may help reduce muscle damage after strenuous exercise. They are believed to help lessen the damage that occurs at the molecular level, minimizing soreness and reduced muscle performance. In a small study of 10 female athletes, blueberries accelerated muscle recovery after strenuous leg exercises. 7

At Nikken, there’s a wonderful way to enjoy your daily intake of antioxidant rich berries with the super fruit juice concentrate Nikken Super Ciaga®.  Drink it neat, with water or make into a delicious shake. Simply incorporate a serving of Kenzen Super Ciaga® into your KVB® Meal Replacement Mix. The KVB® Chocolate flavor is delicious with Kenzen Super Ciaga® mixed in.

The Path to Success…

Nikken is about more than innovative products – it also has a great Income Opportunity1. Income can be earned in a number of ways; selling to customers, getting new business partners on board who develop their own Nikken business, and using the Nikken Incentive programmes to maximise income potential.

We’d like to congratulate Chantal Martin, one of our Independent Nikken Consultants in France.  She has built her Nikken business over the past few months, achieving Silver rank in August and Gold in September AND won the High 5 Incentive. We asked Chantal what her favourite products are and how she built her business and achieved her rank advancements. This is her story:

“Hello, I am Chantal Martin, 68, a retired shopkeeper from Vichy, France. I became an Independent Nikken Consultant in January 2018, after a very positive experience while testing the Nikken Sleep System.

I was very pleased with how I felt after using the Sleep System and wanted to purchase one for myself, as well as try more Nikken products, so I purchased the complete Sleep System and PiMag Water Fountain. I also use the Jade GreenZymes®, KENZEN Super Ciaga®, KVB® Natural Food Mix and the TRUE elements® Marine Organic Skincare. I use these products every day – they are now my essentials!

I became very aware that I was actually responsible for my own health by choice – and not by chance. I attended workshops and discovered how I could share ways of living an active wellness lifestyle with others too.

I introduced Nikken to people who wanted an additional income, with minimal investment, and who wanted to be part of a Team. Our Team currently consists of: two Consultants – who reached Executive rank in two months and won the Power Start Incentive. Their small initial investment has now been returned to them in products. And a Consultant – who has reached Silver rank in just two months and already, has his own team of 3 people.

We are aiming to achieve the PARAGON prize by the end of December. We’ve achieved what we have so far with help and support from Marie and Jean Marie and their participation in our three business presentations.

I am now Gold rank. One of my beliefs is in helping others. Nothing we do is ever a waste of our time, we cannot help everyone, but we will be able to help someone. Nobody has ever become poor by giving. With hard work, perseverance and courage, we can get there. The only way to fail is to give up before reaching the goal. Be grateful for each difficulty you encounter – it could be the gift which will help you grow. The difference between a successful person and others is not lack of strength, nor lack of knowledge – but rather a lack of willpower.

Thank you and GO! GO!”

Be a champion to your natural defence system

Seasonal immunity

On Sunday, 28thOctober 2018 the clocks go back one hour, which means we are truly heading towards the Winter season.

Researchers speculate that since our internal body clock, also known as our circadian rhythm, is affected by changes in daylight, that the seasonal variation of the immune system is also caused by environmental cues, such as daylight and temperature.

Have you ever noticed how healthy you feel in the summer, while certain conditions tend to flare up around the winter months? This isn’t the result of more time spent at the beach, but rather seasonal changes in how our immune system functions.

A recent study1, conducted at the University of Cambridge, has revealed that the activation of around a quarter of our genes, associated with the human immune system, is influenced by the time of the year. Seasonal differences were present across mixed populations in geographically and ethnically diverse locations. However, the pattern of seasonal activity was not reflected as strongly in the Icelandic population. The researchers speculate that this may be due to the near-24 hour daylight during summer and near-24 hour darkness in winter.

As winter approaches, it’s important to maintain a strong and balanced immune system. Taking additional food supplements can help, as can a variety of other activities, such as:

1. Eat a hearty breakfast. Winter is the perfect season for a warm breakfast like porridge. Eating a bowl of warm porridge on a cold morning isn’t just a delicious way to start your day, but it also helps boost your intake of fibre.

2. Get outdoors in the natural daylightas much as possible. Walking for just 20 minutes a day can help maintain your immune system.

3. Consume more fruit and vegetables. Kenzen Super Ciaga® exclusively from Nikken, is an organic super fruit juice concentrate that is not only delicious on its own, but also makes a great mixer with water whilst helping your immune system. The numerous organic berries in the formula are harvested at the peak of their growth cycle for high potency and a natural sweetness. A healthy immune system depends on a balanced mix of vitamins and minerals over time. Nikken’s Kasai® Multi-Vitamin and Minerals provides a supportive range of vitamins and minerals, as well as the associated phytonutrients and nutritional matrices, to help count towards your daily nutritional needs.

Winter can take a toll on our mind, body and soul – so make sure you take time to look after yourself both inside and out.

This September… celebrate all things Organic!

OS-Home-EmailBanner1Organic food has become very popular. The term “organic” refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. How your food is grown or raised could have a major impact on your health as well as the environment. Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their conventionally grown counterparts.

Here are some of the benefits of going Organic:

Organic produce contains fewer pesticides. Chemicals such as fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides are widely used in conventional agriculture and residues remain on (and in) the food we eat.

Organic food is often fresher because it doesn’t contain preservatives that make it last longer. Organic products are usually produced on smaller farms near where it is sold. This way, by going organic you support the local economy.

Organic farming is better for the environment. Organic farming practices reduce pollution, conserve water, reduce soil erosion, increase soil fertility and use less energy. Farming without pesticides is also better for the nearby wildlife as well as people who live close to farms.

Organically raised animals are NOT given antibiotics, growth hormones, or fed animal by-products. Feeding livestock animal by-products increases the risk of mad cow disease (BSE) and the use of antibiotics can create antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Organically raised animals are given more space to move around and access to the outdoors, which help to keep them healthy.

Organic meat and milk are richer in certain nutrients. Results of a 2016 European studyshow that levels of certain nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, were up to 50 % higher in organic meat and milk than in conventionally raised versions.

Organic food is GMO-free. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) or genetically engineered (GE) foods are plants whose DNA has been altered in ways that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding, most commonly in order to be resistant to pesticides or produce an insecticide.

Did you know? 2

  1. 43 % of the amount of British food was found to contain pesticide residues by Government testing in 2015.
  2. 98 % of the research conducted suggests pesticide use would drop in England and Wales if all farming was organic.
  3. 50 % is the average increase in wildlife on organic farms.

This September, Nikken is supporting the Soil Association’s “Organic Your September” campaign and is proud to have the Kenzen Super Ciaga® (#17001) and Jade GreenZymes®(#20310 / #20311) both certified Organic by the Soil Association.

It’s simple – more people buying organic food means more organic farms. More organic farms mean fewer pesticides, more wildlife and more animals raised under the highest standards.

The choices you make with the food you eat have an impact on the world you live in. Switching to just one organic item can really help contribute to changing our food system for the better.
