Rethink plastic…

Single-use plastics are a human addiction that we must face head on. Plastic pollution is not only impacting our waters and marine life, but also the human food chain and our overall health.  Once in our oceans, plastic litter affects the safety of sea transport, fisheries, tourism and recreation. When broken into tiny pieces, plastic attracts toxic chemicals released over decades from industry and agriculture, the concentration of which increases as they move up the food chain.

Here are some facts from the Plastic Oceans Foundation1, an organisation founded with the aim to raise awareness of the growing ocean plastic pollution issue:

Fact 1. More than 8 milliontons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year.

Fact 2. One in threespecies of marine mammals have been found entangled in ‘marine litter’.

Fact 3. Over 90%of all seabirds have plastic pieces in their stomachs.

These facts are overwhelming!

Every minute, the equivalent of a rubbish truck load of plastic goes into our oceans, it never decomposes and will remain there forever. If nothing changes, it is believed that by 2050 all the plastic in the ocean could weigh more than all the fish. Our oceans health affects us all so we need to come together to take action and protect our oceans. You may already have acted on reducing your plastic bag usage, however, there is another issue in the plastic-trash situation that needs tackling. According to Forbes, people buy a staggering one million plastic bottles per minute around the world.

Plastic bottles contain Bisphenol A (BPA), the chemical used to make the plastic hard and clear. BPA is an endocrine disruptor, which has been proven to be hazardous to human health. Plastic bottles are also made from a petroleum product known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET).  Both require huge amounts of fossil fuels to both make and transport them.

With at least 8 MILLION TONS of plastic waste entering our oceans every year, this issue isn’t going away anytime soon. We can we do our bit by rethinking our consumption of single-use plastics.

The reusable Nikken PiMag® Bottleis made from BPA free resin and it is fully biodegradable, breaking down into natural biomass that contributes to the soil’s nutrients. You can carry filtered PiMag® Water with you wherever you go.  Containing Nikken PiMag® Water Technology, the filter in the Nikken PiMag® Bottle, adjust the water’s pH value to an alkaline level of 8.5 – 9.5. The filter lasts for an estimated 250 refills. The cost is approximately half the price per litre of buying bottled water, saving you money too!

We must REDUCE. Think of our sea life and buy fewer plastic products in general, particularly when you know that you are unable to recycle them.
